In this interval, along that path came a lord of sages, Aurva, together with his daughter, who was asking for a good husband. Aurva said: I have a lovely daughter, well known by the name Kandalī; she is grown up, and having heard from the mouth of a messenger she meditates on you alone. As the shadow accompanies (one) as long as the body lasts, and enjoyment (lasts) to the end of enjoyment, and body and senses to the end of life, so does learning (accompany) even an ill-behaved man. Durvāsas said, "Well and good," and the sage (Aurva) gave the dowry; but having handed over his daughter, out of bewilderment he wept. For a woman defiled in speech and in her womb, wilfully, on the soil of Bhārata, there is no expiation in scripture: (hers is) hell for a hundred (lifetimes) of Brahmā. By the knowledge imparted by her father she did not become calm; a nature hard to overcome is not diminished by instruction. Stoutness and thinness and destruction, and arising as visible and invisible — all this is the property of the body, not of the living being nor of the Self. (Yet) though he delighted in his own Self and was of great knowledge, he lost his senses — alas! Separation from a woman is, for the sophisticated, worse than every grief. "And this wife of yours is unreal; therefore she is gone in a moment. For what has but a brief duration is not real and (soon) unseen — it is unreal." Thus has been told, as you have heard, the excellent tale of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, beautiful at every step. What more do you wish to hear?

ūrūdbhavo brahmaṇaśca purā kalpe tapasyataḥ || ūrdhvaretāśca yogīndra orvastena iti smṛtaḥ
He was born from the thigh (ūru) of Brahmā long ago, in a (former) kalpa, while (Brahmā) was practising austerity; and that lord of yogins, whose seed was drawn upward, is therefore remembered as Aurva.

Yet, O sage, I will certainly bear patiently a hundred harsh words of your daughter, and thereafter I will give (her) the fruit (of that). Yet worse than anything is the reproach (of it): to endure a woman's harsh speech. Among good men one ruled by a woman is utterly censured in the three worlds.

What use are these, in Bhārata, to a woman devoted to her husband, or to one not devoted? When (a man) is in distress, at the beginning of (his) pleasure he becomes the foremost one whose desire is (to be fulfilled): service of the husband is proclaimed as the highest duty in all the scriptures.
