Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Listen, child, I shall tell an ancient tale, heard long ago from Dharma's mouth. On Mount Gandhamādana, in a flower-garden, in secret, in one delightful place after another, in the chasms of the mountains, in caves and by rivers — the reckless youth, seeing her breasts and thighs and her moon-face when the wind had loosened her garment, fell into a swoon. And the wanton woman looks with a nectar-glance upon the man who knows love-making and is dearer than life, but with a poison-glance upon the man who gives jewels and knows jewels (i.e. wealth). (Thence comes) loss of life, fortune and fame, in this world and the next; therefore a wife, like a cooking-pot, must be guarded with effort. "Speak with a smile, fair one, words like nectar; quickly, in this lonely place, bind (me) with the nooses of your creeper-arms. You — young, knowing love-play, knowing merit, full of relish, pure..." A passionate woman desires a lover who is pleasing to women's minds, compassionate, very strong, good, a master, generous, and devoted (to her). "You know everything, all-knowing one, expert in the act of love; with delight I wish to hear — tell me the word in your mind." Unblinking, she would drink his face with her two eyes; water would flow in her womb and at once there would be itching. "I have told the behaviour of all unchaste women; hear my heart's word, which is not to be spoken and must be kept hidden." Gazing again and again at his form and dress, out of passion she kept veiling her face with the fine cloth. Hearing Tilottamā's words, Bali's son laughed; skilled in the treatises of love, the wise one understood her feeling. Association with the good comes on an auspicious day, from the merit of the meritorious; separation from the good, a cause of grief, exceeds even death. Not knowing day from night, the two, joined and deluded by desire — seeing (them), the fiery lord, the almighty, a portion of Rudra, grew angry. Tilottamā said: "O lord, ocean of compassion, friend of the wretched, show mercy! In the creator's creation, of all (beings) the female kind is indeed the foolish one." Thus has been told the whole account of the demon born as an ass. Tilottamā (was) Bāṇa's daughter, indeed Uṣā who loved Aniruddha.
