Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Once, O sage, Nanda, filled with joy, in the cowherds' Vraja had the drum sounded, having undertaken the sacrifice to Śakra. Having with affection given him a boon, he set the mountain (back) in place; and Śakra, having bowed to Hari, went away with his hosts.

"Curds, milk, ghee, buttermilk, fresh butter, molasses, honey — taking these, let them perform the worship of Śakra," so he said. Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Ah, I have heard your strange, most astonishing speech — a laughable worldly doctrine, indeed censured in the Vedas. All the people who were in the cave went home from the cave; they all regarded Kṛṣṇa as the wholly complete, all-pervading one.

Whoever are here in this town, cowherds and cowherd women and boys, and girls, and twice-born, and further vaiśyas and śūdras, with devotion — (let them worship). There is no demonstration anywhere that rain arises from Śakra; an unprecedented maxim have I heard today from your mouth. Putting the dwellers of Vraja in front, Hari went to his own house; and Nanda praised that son of his, the full, eternal Brahman, all his limbs bristling with thrill, his eyes filled with tears of devotion.

Thus, filled with joy, he himself had it announced, and he set up a (festival) pole in a lovely, very spacious place. Garga and Gālava, Śākalya, Śākaṭāyana, Gautama, Karuṣa, Kaṇva, Vātsya and likewise Kātyāyana (came); and a thousand pots full of sugar, O sage, with excellent sweet laddus of barley- and wheat-flour. Who is able to make a count of the boys, the girls, the trees, the tree-women, the young men and the young women? As the sky is graced by the moon, so was the middle of his brow; his dark throat and chest were resplendent with a garland of jasmine. If the god is angry, what indeed will he do, when the worship is obstructed? And if pleased, what fruit does the god give here or in the next world? Among all the gods the eating of food offered to Viṣṇu is commended; food not offered to Viṣṇu is excrement, and water is urine. Dearer than life to Viṣṇu are those brahmins who serve Hari; the greatness of Hari-devoted twice-born is hard to find (even) in scripture. By giving to distinguished living beings one would obtain a distinguished fruit; therefore by giving to human beings one obtains eightfold fruit. Whatever (merit) there is in circumambulating the earth, whatever there is in all utterances, whatever merit a man may obtain in all sacrifices and in initiation (— that he obtains). And the dwellers of Vraja worship great Indra, generation after generation, with a great festival at the year's end, for the removal of obstacles and for well-being. Having heard such speech, Mādhava together with Bala laughed aloud, and joyfully spoke again to his father: Listen to the maxim of those learned in the Vedas, father; do not speak what is improper; the good know everywhere the utterance spoken in the Sāmaveda. The elephant, taking with his trunk the desired water from the ocean, gives it to the cloud, and the cloud, driven by the wind, gives it (as rain). By whose command the world's breath (the wind) blows always in the three worlds, and the bright-rayed sun burns, making its circuit of the earth-globe. Then he performed the worship of the mountain and of the chief sages, and reverently of the wise, of brahmins, of cows and of fire. Having praised and bowed to Rāma and Kṛṣṇa the sages and brahmins departed; all the apsarases departed, and the gandharvas and the kinnaras likewise. Nanda said: Indra, the lord of the gods, Śakra, born of Diti(?), elder brother of the wind... Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Hearing the hymn from Nanda's mouth, the slayer of Madhu grew angry; the mighty one made the host of gods futile and paralysed them. They all stood motionless, like figures painted on a wall. Somewhere (they saw him) going with Rādhā to the rāsa circle, and somewhere wearing on his neck the garland given by Rādhā. Nārāyaṇa said: Hearing Indra's words, the abode of Śrī was pleased. Nanda said: Obeisance to the god devoted to brahmins, and to (him who is) the benefactor of cows and brahmins; to him who bears the names and qualities white, red, yellow and dark; to the yogin, whose form is yoga, the teacher even of yogins. Kingship and long life — do the wise reckon them as anything? All this that has been told, brahminhood and the rest, O Lord — that hymn, very hard to obtain, was given to him formerly by Brahmā; (as also) Hari's six-syllabled mantra, an armour that protects all.

There he gave a linen garment and a lovely mass of garlands, and sandal paste, aloe-wood, musk and liquid saffron. — Put your question in the assembly, and also the various formulas; let them declare the highest truth, and whether rain indeed (comes) from Indra. Homage, homage to Kṛṣṇa, to Govinda, who acts for the world's welfare; homage to the god who favours brahmins, to Brahman, to the Supreme Self.

Bathed, having performed the daily rite with devotion, and having put on two washed garments, with his lotus-feet washed, he sat upon a golden seat. — From the sun indeed water is born; from water, crops and trees; from them come food and fruits; on these living beings live. — Homage be to you, the abode of the abodes of endless crores of universes; homage to the witness who has the form of living beings, (the source) of the forms of the Fish and the rest.

With vessels of many kinds, with brahmins and household priests, with cowherds and cowherd women, with girls together with boys — and the water swallowed by the sun: from that, in time, arises (rain); the sun, the clouds and all the rest have been ordained by the Creator. — Homage to you, the unattached, the quality-less, the formless; to him whose nature is exceedingly subtle, and who is grosser than the gross.

And he gave the order for the cooking to be done near the staff, respectfully bringing a hundred brahmins skilled in cooking. — Merit and dwelling in heaven, sin and residence in hell, enjoyment, liberation, servitude to Hari — for men these come about through action. — Rādhā is not able in praising him; what then do the learned praise? Forgive, O Brahman, every offence, moment by moment.

There jewel-lamps blazed all around, and the place, blinded (with smoke) by the incense, was made fragrant. — The Lord is the begetter of all, and practice (the begetter) of conduct and deeds; the Creator too is the giver of fruits; everything comes about by his will. — Protect me, ocean of compassion, friend of the wretched, in the sea of worldly existence; formerly, having performed austerity at a holy place, an eternal son was obtained.

One who steals what has been given, having consumed the property of a god, goes to hell. What has been given to a god must not be eaten, nor food-offering, apart from Hari's. — She is the means of good rain, the thing to be attained, delighting in all crops; crops are the life-breath of living beings, and living creatures live from crops. — He indeed, having obtained firm devotion, will surely obtain servitude (to the Lord) at the end; a man is freed from birth, death, old age, disease and sorrow, and he does not see, even in a dream, the messenger of Yama or Yama's abode.
