muttering the supreme Brahman with a rosary of pure crystal, bearing a staff and a parasol, white-robed, resplendent with his rows of teeth. Seeing him, Yaśodā rose up and bowed, and gave water for his feet, a cow, the honey-mixture, and a golden lion-throne. "Is it Viśvāmitra, or Vālmīki, or Vāmadeva, or Kaśyapa? Is it Saṃvarta, or Utathya, or Kaca, or Bṛhaspati?" "Who you are, Nanda, and who you are, good lady, and who the child is, or by whom he has come—all this I know; in a solitary place, in Nanda's presence, I shall tell it. Is it Kapila, or others who are his portions, or the two seers Nara and Nārāyaṇa? Has the mass of all splendours come embodied? The syllable 'a' denotes a giver; by that he is known as 'Kṛṣṇa'; 'kṛṣ' denotes what is motionless, and the letter 'na' expresses devotion. Taking a chariot, Kṛṣṇa's servants come running from Goloka. The learned are able to count the dust-motes of the earth (but not this). These indeed remove birth and death; protect (them), Nanda of auspicious gaze. The determination of the names of the younger one has been made, as it was heard." Śrī Garga said: Hear, Nanda, I shall declare an ancient story. She was fashioned from his life-breaths, and he, embodied, from her life-breaths; his coming to Gokula in the wake of Rādhā is supreme; (I shall grant) yogic power, a yogic mind, and remembrance of Hari at all times; through the yoga of hearing, uttering and remembering, the net of delusion and sin (is destroyed). He will be with the cowherds and the cowherd women and with Rādhā; then the going to Mathurā, which increases the grief of the gopīs; the increase of their good fortune and of their sons, grandsons and the rest; and the release from the false stain connected with the jewel. On a Thursday, in (the asterism) Revatī, when moon and star are wholly pure, the moon standing (there) and the ascendant Pisces, the lord of the ascendant being in full aspect—(seeing him) making worship and obeisance in his heart by the practice of yoga, they bowed to him with their heads, and he gave them a blessing; filled with joy, (he gave) lovely pearls and corals, and manifold beautiful garments and ornaments. Mounted on horses, on elephants, and in chariots, the king's sons too came swiftly, adorned with jewelled ornaments. Having washed his feet, he sat upon a charming golden seat. And the lord of Vraja, having taken the permission of Garga and of the chief sages, humbly gave loads of gold to the pupils, and full (gifts) to the remaining brahmins too, O Nārada. "Show mercy, ocean of mercy, friend of the wretched, at your lotus feet; protect me, granting fearlessness—what will death do to me? The earth, jewel-wombed, is able to bear the world and is the bringer forth of all crops, through service to your lotus feet. Ah, strange is this round of existence, wrapped in the net of delusion: men's meeting and parting are like the foam of the sea." Some were reciting manifold ancient ballads of the kings Marutta, Śveta, Sagara and Māndhātṛ. Garga went to Mathurā, to Vasudeva's hermitage, O sage; he bowed to him and asked after the welfare of those two sons.
