Bhāratī, going to Bhārata — and (she is) Brāhmī, dear to Brahmā; she is the goddess presiding over speech, and for that reason she is called Vāṇī. Having stayed in Bhārata five thousand years of the Kali (age), they abandoned their river-form and went to the abode of Śrī Hari. All people are subject to women, and in house after house there are unchaste women; with threats and abuse they constantly beat their husbands. After that, among lakhs not one meritorious man remains; men and women and children are contemptible and misshapen. In the Kali age (people are) short-lived and afflicted with old age (even) in their youth: grey-haired in the sixteenth year, and very aged at twenty. Of offspring, and of goods, and especially of villages — all (men) are speakers of falsehood, all are greedy for wealth by theft. Having made the earth free of barbarians, he will vanish; and the earth, kingless, will be seized by the demons. Just as, O brahmin, the weekdays are seven, the lunar days are reckoned sixteen, just as the months are twelve and the seasons just six — the dissolution, in which the universe is flooded with water, lasts only a moment (nimeṣa); in the time immediately after that moment there is creation again, in due order. The Creator, born from the lotus, whose self is knowledge, makes the world-egg; and Śiva, the conqueror of death, is the destroyer, knower of all truths. Form surpassing all, good fortune, honour and dignity, a place on Kṛṣṇa's breast, and wifehood — Lakṣmī obtained (these) by service, having performed divine austerity for a hundred ages at Puṣkara; and by his service she became the bestower of all prosperity.

Having pervaded the whole universe, (Hari) is indeed seen as if in a stream; Hari is in the waters (saras), and she belongs to him — hence by that name she is Sarasvatī.
