adhunā śrotumicchāmi kimuvāca bṛhaspatiḥ || śivaṃ ca gatvā kailāsaṃ dātāraṃ sarvasampadām kiṃ vā'tithiste vimukhaḥ kiṃ vā poṣyā bubhukṣitāḥ || kiṃ vā svatantrā strī vā te kiṃ vā putro'vacaskaraḥ putre yaśasi toye ca samṛddhe ca parākrame || aiśvarye vā pratāpe ca prajābhūmidhaneṣu ca svakarmaphalabhoktā ca jīvo hi saguṇaḥ sadā || ātmabhojayitā sākṣī nirguṇaḥ prakṛteḥ paraḥ bhidyate hadayagranthiśchidyante sarvasaṃśayāḥ || viṣṇumantropāsanayā kṣīyate karma tannṛṇām brāhmaṇānāṃ svadharmaśca kṛṣṇasyārccanamīpsitam || niṣkāmānāṃ nirguṇasya parasya prakṛterapi pāpāni pāpināṃ tīrthe yāvanti prabhavanti ca || naśyanti tāni sarvāṇi vaiṣṇavasparśamātrataḥ brahmādistaṃbaparyyantaṃ naśvaraṃ jalabimbavat || śaraṇaṃ yāhi govindaṃ paramātmānamīśvaram || tāvadbhavecchā bhogecchā strīsukhecchā nṛṇāmiha lakṣmīmāyākāmabījaṃ ṅentaṃ kṛṣṇapadaṃ mune || paraṃ pūjāvidhānaṃ ca stotraṃ ca kavacaṃ mune || etasminnantare tatra cāgamacca bṛhaspatiḥ || praṇanāma mahādevaṃ viṣṇuṃ ca kamalodbhavam munīndevāṃśca saṃbodhya brahmā vai tatra saṃsadi || uvāca nītisāraṃ tatsammataṃ śaṅkarasya saḥ

Now I wish to hear what Bṛhaspati said, having gone to Kailāsa to Śiva, the giver of all riches: "Has a guest of yours been turned away? Or are your dependents hungry? Or is your wife her own mistress? Or is your son one who brings no credit? — in a son, in fame, in water, in prosperity and in valour, in lordship or in majesty, and in subjects, land and wealth. The living being (jīva), possessed of the qualities, is always the eater of the fruit of its own deeds; the Self is the feeder, the witness, quality-less, beyond Nature. The knot of the heart is broken, all doubts are cut through; by worship with the Viṣṇu-mantra that karma of men is worn away. And the proper duty of brahmins is the worship of Kṛṣṇa, desired by the desireless — (worship) of the quality-less One, beyond even Nature. However many sins arise for sinners at a holy place, all of them perish by the mere touch of a Vaiṣṇava. From Brahmā down to a clump of grass (all) is perishable like a bubble on water: go for refuge to Govinda, the Supreme Self, the Lord. Only so long do men here have the desire to be, the desire for enjoyment, the desire for the pleasure of women... The Lakṣmī-, Māyā- and Kāma-seeds, and the word 'Kṛṣṇa' in the fourth case, O sage; and the supreme rite of worship, and the hymn, and the amulet (kavaca), O sage." Meanwhile Bṛhaspati arrived there and bowed to Mahādeva, and to Viṣṇu, and to the lotus-born one. And Brahmā, addressing the sages and the gods there in the assembly, spoke that essence of statecraft which was approved by Śaṅkara.
