(She is) the giver of merit, the mother of merit, having the very form of holy fords; she is to be served by the meritorious, and she is the abode of the meritorious, O sage. Thus has a little been told of the recital of Bhāratī's qualities, which gives happiness, gives liberation, and is the essence; what more do you wish to hear? Padmā, of the nature of goodness and smiling, instructed her; but that Vāṇī (Sarasvatī), possessed by anger, did not become calm. "I shall destroy your honour today in Hari's presence; what will your lover do to me, O darling of the beloved one? Let her go down to the mortal world, where the sinners are; in the Kali age she will obtain a share of their sin, without doubt. Led thence by Bhagīratha's exceedingly difficult austerity, you will become the purified one, Bhāgīrathī by name, on the surface of the earth. Better is a dwelling in fire, pleasant is nearness to savage beasts; but worse even than that, surely, is the suffering of men in the presence of a wicked woman." Sarasvatī said: "Grant (me) an expiation, lord, that purifies the birth in the case of the wicked woman. Where, and what women, live when abandoned by a good husband? If that Vāṇī goes to Bhārata through Gaṅgā's curse, when, released from the curse, will she attain your abode?" "Calamity is the cause of prosperities for all embodied beings; without calamity, whose greatness would come to be in this world, O Padmā? The cook of śūdras, the shrine-priest, the village sacrificer, the uninitiated — (each) would become pure from the touch and sight of my devotee. For the holy fords are not (merely) made of water, nor are the gods made of clay and stone; those purify after a long time, but the devotees of Viṣṇu in an instant — aha! And Indra's rank, and Manu's rank, and godhood, so hard to win, and the enjoyment of the kingdom of heaven and the rest — he does not desire even in a dream."
