Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Seeing the delay of Tārā, who had gone to bathe, the preceptor himself sent a pupil to the Jāhnavī to search for her. Alas, he whose well-behaved and beautiful wife has gone from the house — let him go to the forest: as the forest is, so is the house. So too a householder is not capable of any of his constant duties without the presiding goddess of the house, his own wife who is his power. Hearing Bṛhaspati's words, Mahendra, his eyes like red lotuses and his lip quivering with anger, said to him: "Go quickly to Brahmā's world, together with us; with Brahmā we shall go to Śaṅkara on Kailāsa. A lustful man who out of desire carries off his brother's wife, she being unwilling, obtains a thousand brahmin-murders — there is no doubt of this." Mahendra said: How indeed (could this happen) to the maker of the Vedas, the preceptor of the siddhas and yogins — Bṛhaspati, the son of the preceptor of Śambhu the conqueror of death? (Sons are:) the one born of a boon, the one born of (one's own) seed, the one born in the field (kṣetraja), the fostered one, the son by learning and the son by mantra, and the adopted one is the seventh son. I shall tell another traditional (account); listen: Durvāsas and Garuḍa, the mighty portion of Śaṅkara…

Addressing his pupils, he spoke a maxim approved by scripture — himself with tearful eyes, to them with tearful eyes, he stricken with grief, to them wasted by grief: he who has no chaste, sweet-speaking wife in his house — let him go to the forest: as the forest is, so is the house.
