Of whose lineage, O brahman, was Medhas, best of sages? Where did the king's conversation with the sage take place? ... (adorned) with a drop of musk together with a drop of sandal beneath it, and with a drop of vermilion, (her) fair mid-forehead shining. ... Ever engaged in austerity, Bṛhaspati remains meditating, in dream or in waking, on Kṛṣṇa as his own desired Self. The Moon, afraid, took refuge among the daityas, with the brilliant Śukra, the preceptor of those mighty ones. "The gods' preceptor is my enemy, supreme in the universe, O night-maker; nevertheless the story of one's own kin is recounted in the assembly of dharma; where people are most righteous, there is eternal dharma." Having spoken thus, the daityas' preceptor, in heaven on the bank of the Mandākinī, bathed and had him bathed, and performed worship of Viṣṇu. "She who, deceiving her own husband, goes to another man — let her go to the pit of fire for four yugas by the Moon's sin; and let the Moon's guilt go to him who practises intercourse (with her); by that sin let him go to Kālasūtra for four yugas; emerging from that, the sinner obtains a cāṇḍāla womb; a cāṇḍāla for seven births, a bull for five births, and there let him be cut for as long as a thousand Indras; emerging from that, let him become a jackal for seven births."
