pārvatyuvāca || kathaṃ sudāmaśāpañca sā devī lalābha ha || kathaṃ śaśāpa bhṛtyo hi svābhīṣṭāṃ devakāminīm

Pārvatī said: How then did that goddess incur Sudāmā's curse? How indeed did a servant curse a woman beloved of the god, dear to himself?

The blessed Lord said: Listen, goddess, I shall declare the supremely wondrous secret, to be kept hidden in all the Purāṇas, bestowing good fortune, giving devotion and liberation. And she was roused by her companions, her face and eyes red with anger; casting off her jewelled ornaments, in fine fire-pure garments. Having made Kṛṣṇa alert, he fled away together with the cowherds; Kṛṣṇa, terrified with fear, abandoning the chaste Virajā — "Go thou to a demonic womb, go quickly far from here!" And Sudāmā cursed her: "Go from here to Bhārata!" And when (he) had gone, in the fourteenth year, out of fear of Kaṃsa and by a ruse, Kṛṣṇa, the lord of the world, in the form of an infant, went to Gokula; and Vṛṣabhānu and Nanda went to the highest Goloka; and all the cowherds and those cowherd-women who had assembled went (there). The wise man should first pronounce "Rādhā" and afterwards say "Kṛṣṇa"; in transgressing (this) he incurs the killing of a brahmin — there is no doubt here. Her impenetrable amulet he bore on his neck and on his arm; and having meditated, he performed worship at Puṣkara for a hundred years.
