Nārāyaṇa said: Let the procedure of worship and the hymn be heard, O bull among sages, and the meditation declared in the Sāmaveda, the rule for the goddess's worship. And Kaśyapa, afraid, being requested by Brahmā, composed the mantras, following the seed-syllables of the Veda and by the instruction of the Creator. Taking it, he went, his mind pleased and delighted; Takṣaka at once saw the king seated on his couch. The king went to Vaikuṇṭha, remembering again and again Hari the teacher; and Janamejaya had the funeral rites of his father performed. Then the gods and the sages came into Manasā's presence, and the great Indra too, faint with fear, praised her before her. And the brahmins, the sages and the gods, having gone into Manasā's presence, worshipped Manasā and praised her, each separately. Indra, with his offering-materials assembled, filled with devotion, ever pure, worshipped Manasā and praised her with the utmost reverence. Then, having presented an offering with the sixteen services, well pleased, he gave (her) what was dear (to her), by the command of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and the chief of the gods.

(I worship her) whose radiance is the colour of the white campaka, adorned with jewel ornaments, wearing garments purified by fire, having a snake for her sacred thread. The rule of worship has been told; now hear the narrative of it. I shall relate, O greatly fortunate one, what was heard from the mouth of Dharma. Having performed austerity for three ages (for the sake) of Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Self, that goddess became accomplished and saw the Lord before her. He who does not attend upon (the twilight) of the east and does not worship that of the west is always impure and constantly incurs (the guilt of) brahmin-murder and the rest. Having said this, the best of sages stood with quivering lip; and Manasā, the virtuous one, trembled, and out of fear spoke to her husband. Hearing the Sun's words, the twice-born became pleased; and the Sun, having received the brahmin's blessing, went to his own abode. Hearing Brahmā's words, Jaratkāru the lord of sages touched her navel by yoga, with mantras. What knowledge, arisen or vanished, is there apart from that? Whatever is born of the Veda or born of yoga — the essence of it is the service of Hari. Manasā said: I have been abandoned by you for a fault, by the breaking of your sleep, O lord; wherever I remember you, O kinsman, there you will come to me. Pārvatī instructed Manasā, who was wasted with grief; and Śiva too, with great instruction, auspiciously, in Śiva's abode. Seeing his daughter with her son, Prajāpati obtained joy, and he gave ten million jewels to the brahmins, O sage. The king performed the sacrifice called the snake-rite, O sage, and the whole host of serpents gave up their lives through the power of brahman. Nārāyaṇa said: Well bathed, pure, having rinsed his mouth, wearing two washed garments, he seated the goddess with devotion on a jewelled lion-throne. You are of the nature of pure sattva, free from anger and injury; and the sage was not cursed by you, even though you were abandoned. You have been worshipped by me, virtuous one, as a mother, like Aditi; therefore those who know the ancient (lore) call you Manasā-devī. And you, goddess, are of the form of sattva, through your constant devotion to sattva.
