nārāyaṇa uvāca || śrīkṛṣṇasya guṇaṃ śrutvā vītarāgo babhūva sa || vairāgyaṃ varddhayāmāsa tadā brahmandine dine praṇamya caraṇāmbhoje rurodoccairmuhurmurhuḥ || vṛttāntaṃ kathayāmāsa brahmaśāpādikaṃ tathā karmaṇā brahmaśāpaṃ ca karmaṇā ca śubhāśiṣam || karmaṇā ca mahālakṣmīṃ labheddainyaṃ ca karmaṇā yathā dāne tathā snāne jape vai puṇyakarmasu || evaṃ sarvatra boddhavyaṃ narāṇāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalam mahāvipattau saṃsāre yaḥ smarenmadhusūdanam || vipattau tasya sampattirbhavedityāha śaṅkaraḥ
Nārāyaṇa said: Hearing the qualities of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, he became free of passion, and then, O Brahman, day by day he increased his detachment. Bowing to the lotus feet, he wept aloud again and again, and related the whole affair, beginning with Brahmā's curse. By action (one gets) Brahmā's curse, and by action an auspicious blessing; by action one obtains Mahālakṣmī, and by action wretchedness. As in giving, so in bathing and in muttered prayer and in meritorious acts — thus everywhere the fruit of men's actions is to be understood. Whoever, in great calamity in this worldly round, remembers Madhusūdana, for him in calamity there comes prosperity — so said Śaṅkara.
