Nārada said: She, the beloved of Nārāyaṇa, the excellent one, dwelling in Vaikuṇṭha, the goddess presiding over Vaikuṇṭha, the eternal Mahālakṣmī—and the gods, by her boon, obtained the kingdom that had been overrun by the demons; having worshipped and praised her, they were free of calamity everywhere. In what form was the ocean churned by them, the gods and the rest? By what hymn did that goddess become directly manifest to Śakra?

How did that goddess come to be on earth as the daughter of the ocean? What is her meditation-formula and her protective armour, and the whole sequence of the rite of worship? Having given a boon to the gods and the rest, and a forest-garland to Viṣṇu, with a gracious face and pleased she gave (it) to him who lies on the Milk Ocean. Seeing him accompanied by his throng of pupils who had mastered the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas, Purandara bowed his head to him in agitation. Whoever, on merely obtaining it, eats with devotion what has been offered to Viṣṇu, lifts up a hundred men and himself becomes liberated while living. If even out of ignorance one takes the remnants of Viṣṇu's offerings, he is freed from the sin amassed in seven births—there is no doubt here. Drunk with wealth and deluded, and drunk with liquor yet conscious, though surrounded by kinsmen he becomes a hater of his kin, O sage. This I heard from my teacher's mouth on the occasion of a discussion; I did not ask anything further than this, (of those) enveloped in the flood of worldly sorrow. This, they know, is the liberation that releases worldly people; but the Vaiṣṇavas do not want it, being frightened at the loss of service. And one who worships the Kṛṣṇa mantra, whether a brahmin or even a dog-cooker, passing beyond Brahmaloka goes to the highest Goloka. It is the stairway of the path to Goloka, the seed-cause of deliverance, the very form of the sprout of devotion, ever-growing and imperishable. Having served him for three births a man becomes free of obstacles; by the grace of the Lord of Obstacles a man obtains divine knowledge. And by the blazing lamp of spotless knowledge the knower of reality sees everything, from Brahmā down to a clump of grass, as unreal. He should always be a wanderer and not stay in one place—such a one is called a renunciant; he eats the food of twice-born men of pure conduct, free of greed and the rest. When the man's semen has fallen inside the womb, the semen at once, that very moment, becomes joined with blood. And thus, having undergone extreme torment for four months, driven by the wind he comes forth from the womb in due time. As he lies dull-witted, turning such things over in his mind, O god, when the time comes the exceedingly terrible messenger of Yama seizes him—(him who is) blazing with his own splendour, pleasant to look at, discerning, with the lustre of the full autumn moon, standing before Citragupta. As one pala is made up of sixty vipalas, and a daṇḍa of sixty palas, and a muhūrta is twice that; there he asked as a boon for his own former lordship, and saying 'You shall obtain it before long,' he went home.
