The man who, being strong, scorches his kinsmen with bitter words and with malice, goes to the fire-pit. And he who makes a tank within another's tank, and then abandons it through some mischance of fate, goes to the urine-pit. Thereafter he becomes a Caṇḍāla for three births, and after that is purified. He also becomes a lizard for seven births in Bhārata; then he becomes a man, poor and short-lived. Then he becomes deaf and poor for seven births; for seven births he is maimed in limb, and thereafter he certainly attains purity. Or whoever in Bhārata worships an earthen liṅga with hair in it stands in the hair-pit for as many years as there are particles of the clay. A woman foul of speech, bitter-tongued, who is always striking her husband, stands in the pit of sharp thorns, eating that. A brahmin who sacrifices for Śūdras, who eats the śrāddha food of Śūdras, and who burns the corpses of Śūdras, certainly goes to the pus-pit. Devoured by poisons, burnt, beaten by Yama's messenger; then indeed he takes the form of a fly, and after that the man becomes pure. He who kills crocodiles and the like that have come up out of a lake, O virtuous woman, goes to the crocodile-pit for as many years as the crocodile has spines. He too becomes a crane for three births, a white goose for three births, for one birth a conch-kite, and after that other white birds. He dwells there a hundred years, beaten by Yama's messenger; then he becomes a sheep, and a cock for three births. Whoever in Bhārata, the land of merit, steals from the gods or from brahmins fragrant oil, or myrobalan, or perfumery — that sinner becomes one whose limbs are ceaselessly cut by the sword's edge, without food, crying out, beaten by Yama's messenger. Then for seven births he becomes a cow afflicted with disease, for three births a sheep, and for three births a goat. He who commits the killing of a cow, the killing of a brahmin, the killing of a woman, the killing of a friend, the killing of an embryo — a great sinner in Bhārata — or he who, concerning Gaṇeśa or his image, and so everywhere, O lovely one, entertains a notion of difference, he incurs the guilt of brahmin-murder. Those who revile Viṣṇumāyā, the virtuous one who bestows devotion to Viṣṇu, who is the very form of all power, Prakṛti, the mother of all; he who gives cows leftover food, who yokes a bull as a draft-beast, who feeds others with food got by bull-carting — he certainly incurs the guilt of cow-killing. Whoever steps over a living creature, or over water set aside for the worship of a god, or an offering of food, or a flower, or cooked food — he certainly incurs the guilt of cow-killing. The guru's wife is greater than the guru himself in the honour due to her; and the wife of a god is to be worshipped as one pleases, as is one's chosen deity. His rice-ball offering is the same as excrement, and his water-libation equal to urine; and in the worship of his ancestors and of the gods it is the same, O virtuous woman. Taking the current as the boundary, as far as four cubits — there Nārāyaṇa is the lord, within the excellent womb of the Gaṅgā.
