By whom formerly was she, the mother of the Vedas, brought forth, and (from whom) heard of? And by whom was the goddess worshipped first, and by whom afterwards? / The king, seeing her sorrowing, and instructing (her) with good counsel, then went to Puṣkara out of devotion, for austerity to Sāvitrī. / Having made a garland, O king, one should recite it at a holy place or in a temple, having placed the garland upon seven leaves of the aśvattha tree, self-controlled. / The gods do not accept the worship, nor the ancestors the offering of balls of rice and the water-libation, of a twice-born man who acts by his own whim and neglects the three (daily) junctures. / Nārada said: What is the meditation on Sāvitrī, and what the procedure of worship? And what hymn and mantra did Parāśara give before he departed? / I worship you, mother of the Vedas, the goddess presiding over the Veda, whose form is the Veda and the scriptures, who is the seed-form within the Veda. / Arisen from fragrant substances, holy, giving pleasure, bestowing divine fragrance — this incense, offered by me with devotion, let it be accepted. / Made of the finest jewels and the like, together with flowers and sandal, giving comfort and giving merit — let this fine couch be accepted. / O you whose nature is radiance, O supreme one, O you whose form is supreme bliss, O you who are the very caste-form of the twice-born, be gracious, O beautiful one.
