Nārāyaṇa said: And the Lord Nārāyaṇa, by the means of (i.e. for the sake of) the gods, in the form of Śaṅkhacūḍa, took pleasure with that man's beloved. "Today my birth has borne fruit, today my acts have borne fruit" — (so thought she) seeing the lord of her life come home again from the battle. O Brahman, he assumed in play his own most enchanting form; and the goddess saw before her the eternal God of gods, dark as a fresh raincloud, with eyes like autumn lotuses. "Being full of desire, having made you my lover, I took my pleasure, and by the fruit of that — now it is right to give you the very fruit of your austerity. He who should perform a sprinkling with water and tulasī leaves has bathed in all the fords and is consecrated in all sacrifices. He who at the hour of death obtains a drop of tulasī water mounts a jewelled vehicle and goes to Vaikuṇṭha. (A conch) with one opening and four whorls, adorned with a forest-garland, dark as a fresh raincloud, is named Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa; the single-whorled one is Sudarśana, the hidden-whorled one is the mace-bearer, the two-whorled one shining like a horse's face is declared to be Hayagrīva. In (a conch with) a misshapen mouth there is poverty, in a tawny one there is loss; in one with a stuck whorl there will be disease, in a split one death is certain. By the dust of his lotus feet the earth is at once made pure; there is deliverance for a hundred thousand men, for his forefathers, (and) for his birth." Having said this, Śrī Hari respectfully fell silent with her; and he, abandoning (his human) body, assumed a divine form.
