How did she who is first of creation become manifest at the time of creation? And how did she become fivefold? Tell (me), O best of the knowers of the Veda. "Śak" is a word for sovereignty and "ti" denotes prowess; she who has the nature of these two and bestows them both is proclaimed as Śakti. (He beheld her:) with a lovely nose, smiling, forever bestowing grace on devotees, beautifully adorned with a single yellow garment pure as blazing fire. Her the great lover, the eternal foundation of desire, beheld—exceedingly desirable and like a lovely campaka flower. Then he, the father of the world, wearied, whose bliss is eternal, deposited (his) seed in her womb at an auspicious moment. And that goddess, seeing the egg, her heart tormented, cast that egg in anger into the water in the round hollow. And those two, born from Rādhā's portion, were childless. And from Nārāyaṇa's body arose four-armed attendants. She, three-eyed, bearing a mass of various weapons and missiles, clad in a garment pure as fire, adorned with jewel ornaments—meanwhile there, together with his wife, the four-faced one, the lotus-naveled, a male, came forth from the navel-lotus, O sage. Having praised him, the death of Death, he became known by the name Mṛtyuñjaya, and sat down before Hari on a lovely jeweled lion-throne.
