and casting off his night garment, having bathed with auspicious water, having put on two washed cloths and made a bright forehead mark—through his servants he mustered, step by step, an assembly of troops, with three hundred thousand horses and five hundred thousand elephants. And joined with the Śarāvatī it (the river) issued forth from the Himālaya, and keeping Gomanta on its left it entered the western ocean. And Kālī and Skanda and Śaṅkara gave him their blessing; seeing the Dānava, all of them, Nandīśvara and the rest, rose up. Even when they are offered dwelling in the same world as Hari, equal power with him, the same form, nearness to him, and union with him, the Vaiṣṇavas do not accept these—apart from serving him. Such heat as the sun has in summer it does not have in the cold season; and such as it has at midday it does not have at evening and morning. He is both of the form of Prakṛti and he himself is called Puruṣa; he is the Self and all living beings, the Supreme who bears many forms. How was Hiraṇyākṣa, together with his brother, slain by the gods? How indeed were the Asuras, Śumbha and the rest, struck down by the gods? There took place of old a most marvellous battle between Prakṛti, the mistress of all, the mother of all, and Śumbha and the others.
