By the curse of Bhāratī the sovereign lady of the gods came to Bhārata — she of Viṣṇu's own nature, supreme, herself Viṣṇupadī, the chaste one. All the sons came to be of great strength and prowess, their bodies possessed of the brilliance of the summer midday sun. Seeing her, purified by fire, [set within a receptacle,] adorned with jewel-ornaments, the king praised her and bowed again and again. All those (sins) of men perish by the mausala bathing; and the merit arising from bathing on an auspicious day the Vedas do not even declare. And the merit is ten million times (that) of an ordinary bath; at eclipses of the moon and the sun it is held to be ten times that. And the Vaiṣṇavas do not eat (otherwise), being always eaters of what has been offered; and the men who daily eat the food presented to Viṣṇu — Gaṅgā said: If I go to Bhārata, lord, by Bhāratī's curse of old, and by your command, O king of kings, and now by (your) austerity — whoever, having meditated on you with the meditation declared by Kauthuma, shall worship, and whoever praises and bows daily, he obtains the fruit of a horse-sacrifice. Then, making a multiplication of bodies and letting (him) consume his own karma, I give him likeness of form with me and make him my attendant. Then he bowed to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Self, the Lord — and Bhagīratha (bowed) to Gaṅgā; and Hari vanished and went. (Her) bearing a mass of braided hair joined with a garland of mālatī, charming with a dot of vermilion along with dots of sandal — garment, ornament, garland, scent, water for rinsing the mouth, and a lovely fine couch: these sixteen are to be given. She who, by thirty lakhs of yojanas, is five times that in length, who has encompassed Śivaloka — to that Gaṅgā I bow. Spread out to the measure of a single krośa, and thereafter nowhere diminished, who upon the earth is Alakanandā — to that Gaṅgā I bow. Nārāyaṇa said: Bhagīratha, having praised Gaṅgā with this praise, O Nārada, took her and went to where the Sāgaras had perished. And the Lord Nārāyaṇa (gave) a lovely forest-garland, and Lakṣmī a makara earring wrought with priceless jewels. 'All the Manus, men, and the sages and Vaiṣṇavas, purified by my mantra, will come to my abode to see me.' Having spoken thus, the Eternal One fell silent in the sky. And seeing that, the Lord of the world said with joy to Śiva:
