By whom did she become manifest, and who is she, the best of the knowing ones? Or tell (me) what her characteristic is, (and) how she became fivefold. And she would be of the nature of Brahman, Māyā, eternal, everlasting — as (is) the self, as (is) power, as burning-force is held (to reside) in fire. Contentment, nourishment, and likewise Lakṣmī, livelihood, and the mother too: she is of the nature of all powers, the second power of Kṛṣṇa the supreme Self, so declared, spoken of in the Veda, agreed upon by all, to be worshipped by all and saluted by all. Hear from me of another: she who is skilled in the mantras of the twilight worship and in the tantras, who has the form of the twice-born and the other castes, whose form is muttered prayer, an ascetic woman, the goddess dwelling in Goloka who assumes the guise of a gopī, who is of the nature of supreme delight and who takes the form of satisfaction and of indignation. In every universe the form of Prakṛti is (that of) all women. The five kinds of goddesses are proclaimed to be the most complete; the (holy) fords desire the touch and sight of them for the purification of themselves. She without whom every rite in the worlds is fruitless — she is the Mātṛkā, most worthy of worship, and she is proclaimed as Ṣaṣṭhī, the protectress of infants in every universe, destroyer of grief, torment, sin, affliction, sorrow and poverty; when well pleased she grants all wishes to all women. Learn, O lord of sages, what the digits (kalās) of Prakṛti are; whose wives they severally are, all these I shall describe to you. That goddess who presides over love-play is Rati, the good wife of Kāma; without her all the worlds would be devoid of dalliance and delight. And Knowledge has three wives: intellect, mental power, and memory; without them the whole world is always dull, like a corpse. And Aditi the mother of the gods, and Surabhi the parent of cows, and Diti the mother of the daityas, and Kadrū, Vinatā, Danu; and Ūṣā the daughter of Bāṇa, and her friend Citralekhā; Prabhāvatī, Bhānumatī, and the good Māyāvatī. Thus has all the fivefold division of Prakṛti been told. All these are worshipped on earth, and in the holy land of Bhārata; then by Brahmā and the (other) gods, by sages and by the Manus, they are with devotion always worshipped and saluted with flowers, incense and the rest.
