The Sūta's son said: Brahmā, having fashioned the universe, placed his seed in Sāvitrī, the excellent woman, as a lustful man does in a lustful woman. Then from the Creator's back Adharma was born; and from his left side arose Alakṣmī, exceedingly lustful. He (Adharma) is held to be the tāmasa (element) of all the universes; Brahmā himself is rājasa, while Śiva and Viṣṇu are sāttvika. "You have been set to askesis by your father — how are we (to be set) to worldly life? Alas, alack, the mind of a master turns to what is contrary!" And Brahmā, overcome with rage, cursed his son, O twice-born; with trembling limbs, reddened face and quivering lip he spoke. Nārada said: "Restrain your anger, O destroyer, father, father, teacher of the world! Ah, that a creator, a lord of ascetics, should have this groundless anger at me! A teacher who, trusted by his pupils, shows them a wrong path — his abode is in the Kumbhīpāka (hell) as long as moon and sun (endure)."
