Brahmavaivarta Purana — Brahma Khanda — Chapter 30

BvP 1 30.1

श्रीनारायण उवाच ।।

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca || lambodaro harirumāpatirīśaśeṣā brahmādayaḥ suragaṇā manavo munīndrāḥ || vāṇīśivātripathagā kamalādikāśca saṃcintayedbhagavataścaraṇāravindam viśveṣu sarveṣu ca viśvadhāmnaḥ santyeva śaśvadvidhiviṣṇurudrāḥ || teṣāṃ ca saṃkhyāḥ śrutayaśca devāḥ paraṃ na jānanti tamīśvaraṃ bhaja nārāyaṇapriyā lakṣmīḥ sarvasampatsvarūpiṇī || rāgādhiṣṭhātṛdevī yā sā ca pūjyā sarasvatī

Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Lambodara (Gaṇeśa), Hari, Umā's lord (Śiva), Īśa, Śeṣa, Brahmā and the rest, the hosts of gods, the Manus, the foremost of sages, Vāṇī (Sarasvatī), Śivā, the goer by three paths (Gaṅgā), Kamalā (Lakṣmī) and the others — (like them) let one meditate upon the lotus feet of the Lord. In each and every universe there are always the Brahmās, Viṣṇus and Rudras of him who is the abode of the universe; their number neither the Vedas nor the gods know — worship that supreme Lord. Lakṣmī, dear to Nārāyaṇa, is the very form of all prosperity; and Sarasvatī, who is the goddess presiding over the musical modes, she too is to be worshipped.

The ocean of worldly existence is exceedingly deep and dreadful, its limbs writhing, encircled by forest-fires and serpents; whoever wishes to cross over it and go to (the Lord's) service — let him meditate on the lotus feet of the Blessed One.

The fame of the lifting of Govardhana is exceedingly slight, and (so is) the earth held, still wet, upon the very tip of (his) tusk: of him, the primal one, who bears the universes in the pores of his hair — let one meditate on the lotus feet of the Lord.

वेदाङ्गवेदमुखनिःसृतकीर्त्तिरंशैर्वेदाङ्गवेदजनकस्य हरेर्विधातुः।। जन्मान्तकादिभयशोकविदीर्णदेहः संचिन्तयेद्भगवतश्चरणारविन्दम्

vedāṅgavedamukhaniḥsṛtakīrttiraṃśairvedāṅgavedajanakasya harervidhātuḥ|| janmāntakādibhayaśokavidīrṇadehaḥ saṃcintayedbhagavataścaraṇāravindam

Of Hari the ordainer, begetter of the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas, whose fame issues forth only in fragments from the mouths of the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas — with his body torn by the fear and grief of birth, death and the rest, (a man) should meditate on the lotus feet of the Lord.

Of him who is a bee at the lotus faces of the cowherd women, of the lord of the rāsa dance, of the Person who is the lover of those who relish rasa, of Viṣṇu in the garb of Vraja sporting in Vṛndāvana — of that Blessed One one should meditate upon the lotus feet.

You and we are parts of a part of a fraction of him; the Manus and the foremost sages are parts of a part of a fraction; (Śiva) Bhava and the other chief ones are particular fractions, and the great Virāṭ is a particular fraction of him.

The thousand-headed (Śeṣa) bears upon a spot of his head the universe, which is (to him) no bigger than a mustard seed; and Śeṣa (rests) upon the tortoise, as a gnat upon an elephant; and the tortoise is (but) a fraction of a fraction of a part of Kṛṣṇa.

Of the spotless glory of the mighty Lord of Goloka nothing at all is made plain in Veda or Purāṇa; not even those headed by the lotus-born (Brahmā) are able to tell it. Worship him, the Lord of all, the foremost of the lotus-born.

He, the ordainer even of the ordainer (Brahmā), performs creation, having established the eternal Prakṛti as the mother of the world. And Brahmā and the rest, and all beings born of Prakṛti, worship Śrī Prakṛti, the giver of devotion.

Prakṛti, whose own form is Brahman, is not separate (from him); it is by her that the eternal one performs creation. All the Śrīs in the worlds, and Māyā too, (exist) by a fraction of her, and all are bewildered by her.
