nārada uvāca || śrutaṃ sarvaṃ jagannātha tvatprasādājjagadguro || bhavānbrahmasvarūpaṃ ca vada brahmanirūpaṇam vaikuṇṭhe ca purā pṛṣṭe dharmeṇa brahmaṇā tadā || yaduvāca hariḥ kiñcinnibodha kathayāmi te vadanti yoginastatra paraṃ brahma sanātanam || divāniśaṃ ca dhyāyante satyaṃ tatsarvamaṅgalam nityaṃ tatparamaṃ brahma nityā ca prakṛtiḥ smṛtā || dvayoḥ samaṃ ca prādhānyamiti kecidvadanti hi tattejomaṇḍalākāre sūryyakoṭisamaprabhe || nityaṃ sthalaṃ ca pracchannaṃ golokābhidhameva ca nānācitravicitrāḍhye vasantaṃ varamīśvaram || navīnanīradaśyāmaṃ kiśoravayasaṃ śiśum brahmaviṣṇuśivānantadharmādyairvanditaṃ mudā || bhaktapriyaṃ bhaktanāthaṃ bhaktānugrahakārakam etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ parabrahmasvarūpakam || asmākaṃ cintanīyaṃ ca sevyaṃ vanditamīpsitam

Nārada said: I have heard everything, Lord of the world, by your grace, O teacher of the world; and you are of the nature of Brahman — speak the exposition of Brahman. And when in Vaikuṇṭha of old Hari was asked by Dharma and by Brahmā, what he then said, hear a little of it: I shall tell you. There the yogins speak of the supreme, eternal Brahman, and day and night they meditate on it as true and wholly auspicious. That supreme Brahman is eternal, and Prakṛti too is held to be eternal; some indeed say that the primacy of the two is equal. In that mass of light, shaped like a disc, with the brightness of ten million suns, there is an eternal hidden place named Goloka, and (they meditate on) the excellent Lord dwelling in that place rich with many varied wonders, dark as a fresh raincloud, of youthful age, a child, joyfully praised by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, Ananta, Dharma and the rest, dear to devotees, the lord of devotees, the bestower of grace on devotees. All this of the nature of the supreme Brahman has been told to you; it is for us the object of thought, of service, of homage, of desire.

brahmātiriktā prakṛtiḥ kiṃ vā brahmasvarūpiṇī || prakṛterlakṣaṇaṃ kiṃ vā sārabhūtaṃ śrutau śrutam

Is Prakṛti other than Brahman, or is she of the very nature of Brahman? And what is the defining mark of Prakṛti — what essential (teaching) is heard in the Śruti?

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

prādhānyaṃ tasya sṛṣṭau ca dvayormadhye varaṃ param || vicāryya manasā sarvaṃ sarvajña vada māṃ dhruvam

And (what of) its primacy in creation? Which of the two is the higher and better? Having pondered it all in your mind, O all-knowing one, tell me for certain.

Mahādeva said: Whatever you have asked, child, is deeply hidden, the highest knowledge, and very hard to come by in the Vedas and in the Purāṇas, O Nārada.

BvP 1 28.12

paramātmasvarūpaṃ ca paraṃ brahma sanātanam|| sarvadehasthitaṃ sākṣisvarūpaṃ dehikarmaṇām

prāṇāḥ pañca svayaṃ viṣṇurmano brahmā prajāpatiḥ || sarvajñānasvarūpo'haṃ śaktiḥ prakṛtirīśvarī

The five vital breaths are Viṣṇu himself; the mind is Brahmā, the lord of creatures; I am of the nature of all knowledge; the power is Prakṛti, the sovereign lady.

ātmādhīnā vayaṃ sarve sthite tasminvayaṃ sthitāḥ || gate gatāśca parame naradevamivānugāḥ

We are all dependent on the Self; when he abides, we abide; and when the supreme one goes, we go too, like retainers with a king.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.15

jīvastatpratibimbaṃ ca sarvabhogī hi karmaṇām || yathā'rkacandrayo rbimbaṃ jalapūrṇaghaṭeṣu ca

The individual soul is his reflection, and it is indeed the enjoyer of all deeds — as the reflected image of the sun and the moon (appears) in pots filled with water.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.16

bimbaṃ ghaṭeṣu bhagneṣu pralīnaṃ candrasūryyayoḥ || tathā layaprasaṃge sa jīvo brahmaṇi līyate

When the pots are broken, the reflection is dissolved back into the moon and the sun; so at the occasion of dissolution that soul is dissolved into Brahman.

BvP 1 28.17

ekameva paraṃ brahma śeṣe vatsa bhavakṣaye || vayaṃ pralīnāstatraiva jagadetaccarācaram

The supreme Brahman alone remains, child, at the destruction of the world; we, and this world of moving and unmoving things, are dissolved in that very (Brahman).

(It is) of the nature of supreme bliss and the cause of supreme bliss, supreme, the primal one, the Puruṣa, without qualities, beyond Prakṛti; and in that very one Prakṛti, who is the nature of all seeds, lies dissolved.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.23

yathā'gnau dāhikā śaktiḥ prabhā sūryye yathā mune|| yathā dugdhe ca dhāvalyaṃ jale śaityaṃ yathaiva ca

As the burning power (is) in fire, as radiance (is) in the sun, O sage, and as whiteness (is) in milk, and just as coldness (is) in water,

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.24

yathā śabdaśca gagane yathā gandhaḥ kṣitau sadā || tathā hi nirguṇaṃ brahma nirguṇā prakṛtistathā

and as sound (is) in the sky, as scent is always in the earth — just so indeed is Brahman without attributes, and so too is Prakṛti without attributes.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.25

sṛṣṭyunmukhena tad brahma cāṃśena puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ || sa eva saguṇo vatsa prākṛto viṣayī smṛtaḥ

That Brahman, through the portion of itself inclined toward creation, is called Puruṣa; that same one, my child, is called endowed with attributes, belonging to Prakṛti, and possessed of objects (of enjoyment).

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.26

yathā mṛdā kulālaśca ghaṭaṃ kartuṃ kṣamaḥ sadā|| tathā prakṛtyā tadbrahma sṛṣṭiṃ sraṣṭuṃ kṣamo mune

As the potter is always able to make a pot with clay, so, O sage, that Brahman is able to create the creation with Prakṛti.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.28

svarṇena kuṇḍalaṃ karttuṃ svarṇakāraḥ kṣamo yathā || tathā brahma tayā sārddha sṛṣṭiṃ kartumiheśvaraḥ

As the goldsmith is able to make an earring with gold, so here the Lord Brahman (is able) to make the creation together with her.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.29

kulālasṛṣṭā na ca mṛnnityā caiva sanātanī || na svarṇakārasṛṣṭaṃ tatsvarṇaṃ vā nityameva ca

And the clay is not created by the potter, nor is it eternal and everlasting; nor is that gold created by the goldsmith, nor is it eternal.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.31

mṛdaṃ svarṇaṃ samāhartuṃ kulālasvarṇakārakau || na samarthau ca mṛtsvarṇaṃ tayorāharaṇe kṣamam

The potter and the goldsmith are not able to produce clay and gold; the clay and the gold are capable of being fetched by those two.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

BvP 1 28.32

tasmāttatprakṛterbrahma parameva ca nārada || iti kecidvadantyevaṃ dvayorvai nityatā dhruvam

Therefore that Brahman is indeed higher than Prakṛti, O Nārada; thus some speak — (while others hold that) the eternality of the two is certain.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.33

kecidvadanti tadbrahma svayaṃ ca prakṛtiḥ pumān || brahmātiriktā prakṛtirvadantīti ca kecana

Some say that that Brahman is itself both Prakṛti and the Male; and some say thus, that Prakṛti is distinct from Brahman.

tadbrahma paramaṃ dhāma sarvakāraṇakāraṇam || tadbrahmalakṣaṇaṃ brahmannidaṃ kiṃcicchrutau śrutam

That Brahman is the supreme abode, the cause of all causes; this much of the definition of that Brahman, O brahmin, is heard in the Veda.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.35

brahma cātmā ca sarveṣāṃ nirliptaṃ sākṣirūpi ca || sarvavyāpi ca sarvādi lakṣaṇaṃ ca śrutau śrutam

Brahman is also the Self of all, unattached and of the nature of a witness; all-pervading and the origin of all — such is the definition heard in the Veda.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.36

tadbrahmaśaktiḥ prakṛtiḥ sarvabījasvarūpiṇī || yatastacchaktimadbrahma cedaṃ prakṛtilakṣaṇam

The power of that Brahman is Prakṛti, who is the very form of the seed of all; since Brahman possesses that power, this is the definition of Prakṛti.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.37

tejorūpaṃ ca tadbrahma dhyāyante yoginaḥ sadā || vaiṣṇavāstanna manyante madbhaktāḥ sūkṣmabuddhayaḥ

The yogins always meditate on that Brahman as having the form of light; the Vaiṣṇavas, my devotees of subtle intellect, do not accept that.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 28.38

tattejaḥ kasya nāścaryyaṃ dhyāyante puruṣaṃ vinā || kāraṇena vinā kārya kuto vā prabhavedbhuvi
