Brahmavaivarta Purana — Brahma Khanda — Chapter 27

BvP 1 27.1

nārada uvāca || bhakṣyaṃ kiṃ vā'pyabhakṣyaṃ ca dvijānāṃ gṛhiṇāṃ prabho || yatīnāṃ vaiṣṇavānāṃ ca vidhavābrahmacāriṇām kṛmibhiḥ śālimānaiśca bhakṣitastatra tiṣṭhati || viṇmūtrabhojanaṃ kṛtvā yāvadindrāścaturdaśa tāmbūlaṃ vidhavāstrīṇāṃ yatīnāṃ brahmacāriṇām || tapasvināṃ ca viprendra gomāṃsasadṛśaṃ dhruvam abhakṣyaṃ ca paṭolaṃ ca śatruvṛddhikaraṃ param || tṛtīyāyāṃ caturthyāṃ ca mūlakaṃ dhananāśanam rātrau ca dadhi bhakṣyaṃ ca śayanaṃ sandhyayordine || rajasvalāstrīgamanametannarakakāraṇam

Nārada said: What is edible and what is inedible, O Lord, for twice-born householders, for ascetics, for Vaiṣṇavas, for widows and for celibate students? … eaten by worms and by rice-measures, it remains there; having eaten dung and urine (he stays) for as long as fourteen Indras (endure). Betel for widowed women, for ascetics, for celibate students, and for those practising austerity, O best of brahmins, is surely like the flesh of a cow. The paṭola too is inedible, and greatly increases enemies; and radish on the third and fourth (lunar days) destroys wealth. Curds at night as food, and sleeping by day at the two twilights, and going to a menstruating woman—this is a cause of hell.
