śrībrahmovāca || tvaṃ gaccha tapase vatsa kiṃ me saṃsārakarmaṇi || ahaṃ yāsyāmi golokaṃ vijñātuṃ kṛṣṇamīśvaram sā sādhvī kulajā yā ca patisevāsu tatparā || sadvaro durvinītā ca saṃbhavenna kadācana || ākare padmarāgāṇāṃ janma kācamaṇeḥ kutaḥ ādau bhavedgṛhī loko vānaprasthastataḥ param || tatasta pasvī mokṣāya krama eṣa śrutau śrutaḥ ataḥ priyatame putre nyasedātmaparaṃ dhanam || ityevamuktvā sa brahmā virarāma ca śaunaka || uvāca vacanaṃ tātaṃ nārado jñānināṃ varaḥ śrīnārada uvāca || dehi me kṛṣṇamantraṃ ca yanmanovāñchitaṃ mama || tatsambandhi ca yajjñānaṃ yatra tadguṇavarṇanam

Śrī Brahmā said: Go you, my child, for austerity; what have I to do with the business of worldly life? I shall go to Goloka to know Kṛṣṇa the Lord. She is a virtuous woman who is born of a (good) family and is devoted to the service of her husband; a good husband and an ill-bred (wife) can never come together — in a mine of rubies, how should a glass bead be born? First a person should be a householder, then after that a forest-dweller; then an ascetic, for liberation — this is the sequence heard in scripture. Therefore one should place upon a most beloved son the wealth that is beyond the self. Having spoken thus, that Brahmā fell silent, O Śaunaka. Nārada, the best of the knowing, spoke a word to his father. Śrī Nārada said: Give me the Kṛṣṇa mantra, which is what my mind longs for, and the knowledge connected with it, wherein there is the description of his qualities.

vedapraṇihito dharmo hyadharmastadviparyyayaḥ || ādau vipro yajñasūtraṃ paridhāya sukhaṃ sukhī

na vatsa duṣṭāḥ sarvāśca yoṣitaḥ kamalākalāḥ || svarveśyāṃśāśca kulaṭā asadvaṃśa samudbhavāḥ

Not (all), my child — not all women are wicked; (they are) portions of Lakṣmī; but the unchaste ones, portions of the celestial courtesans, are those born of a bad lineage.

varaṃ hutavahe vāsaḥ sarpavaktre ca kaṇṭake || etebhyo duḥkhado vāsaḥ striyā durmukhayā saha

tataḥ sukhatamaṃ putradarśanaṃ sparśanaṃ mune || sarvebhyaḥ preyasī kāntā priyā tena prakīrttitā ||

More pleasant than that is the sight and the touching of a son, O sage; therefore the wife, dearer than all, is declared to be beloved.

BvP 1 24.28

putraprayojanā kāntā śatakāntāpriyaḥ sutaḥ || nāsti putrātparo bandhurnāsti putrātparaḥ priyaḥ

A wife has a son as her purpose; a son is dearer than a hundred wives. There is no kinsman higher than a son, there is nothing dearer than a son.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 24.29

sarvebhyo jayamanvicchetputrādekātparājayam || na cātmani priyo'rthaśca tasmādapi sutaḥ priyaḥ

One should wish for victory over all, (but) defeat from the son alone; and wealth is not dear to oneself — dearer than that too is the son.

jalabudbudavatsarvaṃ saṃsāramatinaśvaram || jalarekhā yathā mithyā tathā brahmañjagattrayam

All this round of existence is utterly perishable, like a bubble on water; as a line drawn on water is unreal, so, O brahmin, are the three worlds.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 24.33

vihāya haridāsyaṃ ca viṣaye yanmanaścalam || durlabhaṃ mānavaṃ janma mā bhūttanniṣphalaṃ kvacit

(Alas that,) abandoning the service of Hari, the mind wavers toward objects of sense. Human birth is hard to obtain — let it never become fruitless.

kā vā kasya priyā putro bandhuḥ ko vā bhavārṇave || karmormibhiryojanā ca tadapāyo viyojanā

Who indeed is whose beloved, who a son, who a kinsman, in the ocean of existence? Joining together is by the waves of karma, and separation is the passing away of that.

sukarma kārayedyo hi tanmitraṃ sa pitā guruḥ || durbuddhiṃ janayedyo hi sa ripuḥ syātkathaṃ pitā

He who causes (one) to do good deeds — he is a friend, he is a father, a teacher; but he who generates evil-mindedness, he is an enemy: how could he be a father?

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BvP 1 24.36

BvP 1 24.43

brahmovāca || patyurmantraṃ piturmantraṃ na gṛhṇīyādvicakṣaṇaḥ || viviktāśramiṇāṃ caiva na mantraḥ sukhadāyakaḥ

Brahmā said: A discerning man should not receive a mantra from his husband(-figure)/master nor from his father; nor is a mantra from those who dwell in solitary hermitages a giver of happiness.

niṣekāllabhyate mantro gururbharttā ca kāminī|| vidyā sukhaṃ bhayaṃ duḥkhaṃ puruṣaiḥ svecchayā na ca

A mantra is obtained (as if) by insemination — (so too) the teacher, the husband, and the beloved woman; learning, happiness, fear, and sorrow are not (had) by men at their own will.
