शौनक उवाच ।। ऋषिवंशप्रसङ्गेन बभूवुर्विविधाः कथाः ।। उपालम्भेन प्रस्तावात्कौतुकेन श्रुता मया शिवस्य कवचं स्तोत्रं मन्त्रं च द्वादशाक्षरम् ।। ददौ गन्धर्वराजाय वसिष्ठश्च कृपानिधिः गन्धर्वस्य वचः श्रुत्वा चाह सीच्चन्द्रशेखरः ।। उवाच दीनं दीनेशो दीनबन्धुः सनातनम् वरयान्यं वरं वत्स यत्ते मनसि वांछितम्।। इन्द्रत्वममरत्वं वा ब्रह्मत्वं लभ दुर्लभम् श्रीशंकर उवाच ।। हरिभक्तिं हरेर्दास्यं पुत्रं परमवैष्णवम्।। चिरायुषं च गुणिनं शश्वत्सुस्थिरयौवनम्

Śaunaka said: In the course of (the account of) the lineage of the sages, various tales arose; out of remonstrance, and from the occasion, and out of curiosity, I have heard them. // (Vasiṣṭha) gave Śiva's armour-hymn, the praise-hymn, and the twelve-syllabled mantra to the king of the gandharvas — Vasiṣṭha, the treasury of compassion. // And hearing the gandharva's words, the moon-crested one spoke; the lord of the wretched, the eternal friend of the wretched, spoke to the wretched one: // "Choose another boon, child, whatever is desired in your mind; obtain lordship over the gods, or immortality, or the hard-to-win state of Brahmā." // Śrī Śaṅkara said: "(Choose) devotion to Hari, servitude to Hari, a son who is a supreme Vaiṣṇava, long-lived and virtuous, with youth ever firmly enduring."
