Brahmavaivarta Purana — Brahma Khanda — Chapter 11

BvP 1 11.1

śaunaka uvāca|| dvijaḥ sa bhāryyāṃ saṃtyajya kiñcakāra viśeṣataḥ|| aśvinorvā mahābhāga kiṃ nāma kasya vaṃśajau ityuktvā sutapā gehaṃ pratasthe sūnunā saha|| aśvibhyāṃ sahitaḥ sūryyaḥ prayayau ca tadantikam sarvāśramaiḥ paro vipro nāsti viprasamo guruḥ|| vedavedāṅgatattvajña ityāha kamalodbhavaḥ avidyo vā savidyo vā saṃdhyāpūto hi yo dvijaḥ|| sa eva viṣṇusadṛśo na harau vimukho yadi sandhyāhīno'śucirnityaṃ kṛṣṇe vā vimukho dvijaḥ|| sa eva brāhmaṇābhāso viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

Śaunaka said: That twice-born, having abandoned his wife — what in particular did he do? And of the two Aśvins, O greatly fortunate one, what are their names, and in whose line were they born? Having said this, Sutapas set out for his house together with his son; and the Sun, accompanied by the two Aśvins, went into his presence. The brahmin is superior to all the (other) stages of life; there is no guru equal to a brahmin, who knows the truth of the Vedas and the auxiliary sciences — so said the lotus-born. Whether unlearned or learned, that twice-born who is purified by the twilight rite is himself like Viṣṇu, provided he is not turned away from Hari. But the twice-born who neglects the twilight rite, who is always impure, or who is turned away from Kṛṣṇa, he is a mere semblance of a brahmin, like a snake without venom.
