Sauti said: Bhṛgu's sons were Cyavana and Śukra, O best of those who know. Kratu's wife Kriyā, too, bore the Vālakhilyas. By him (came) the son of Viśravas: Kubera, the lord of wealth; and Rāvaṇa, Kumbhakarṇa, and the righteous Vibhīṣaṇa. The garland-maker, the conch-worker, the smith, the weaver, the potter, the bell-metal worker — these six are the foremost of artisans. A cheek marked with a dot of vermilion and a dot of musk, ever radiant, with a very costly jewelled earring; the science of love, made by Kāmadeva and the rest for the delighting of women; whatever craft of adornment there is — this was obtained, and is hard to obtain even from the moon. And whatever woman a man addresses with the word "mother" — she is truly the equal of a mother; dharma is witness even for the good. And Ghṛtācī, leaving the artisan, went to the house of Kāma; having made love with Kāma, she told him that tale. But once at Prayāga, having done craftwork for the king, he went to the Ganges to bathe, and there he saw a lovely woman. He who, deluded and attached to sense objects, having obtained birth in Bhārata, abandons Kṛṣṇa the lord of all, is bewildered by Viṣṇu's māyā. Garland-makers, smiths, conch-workers, weavers, potters, thread-makers, and likewise workers in gold and in painting. From the seed of a Tīvara in the wife of an oil-presser was born a fallen one, a dasyu, and he is called Leṭa. From a Kṣatriya in a Karaṇa girl a Rājaputra was born; but from a Karaṇa in a Rājaputrī, one called Āgarī. Their ears are unpierced; they are cruel, fearless, unconquerable in battle, devoid of purity and of good conduct, hard to withstand, bereft of dharma. The brahmin in anger abandoned both that son and his own woman; and she by yoga became a river, and she is known as the Godāvarī. The grandfather is the father's father; his father is the great-grandfather. Above that, kinsmen are declared to be of the same gotra. The wife's mother is the mother-in-law, and her father is held to be the father-in-law. One of the same womb is a brother; one of the same womb, a sister. The son's father-in-law is held to be a brother, a relative by marriage; and with the daughter's father-in-law too that same relationship is declared. For the mighty it is no fault, so long as (this) obtains, age after age.
