bṛhaspatiruvāca ityete pitaro devā devānāmapi devatāḥ / saptasvete sthitā nityaṃ sthāneṣu pitaro 'vyayāḥ

Bṛhaspati said: Thus these Fathers are gods, deities even of the gods; these imperishable Fathers abide eternally in seven stations.

prajāpatisutā hyete sarveṣāṃ tu mahātmanām / ādyo gaṇastu yogānāmanuyogavivarddhanaḥ

dvitīyo devatānāṃ tu tṛtīyo dānavādinām / śeṣāstu varṇiṃnāṃ jñeyā iti sarve prakīrttitāḥ

The second (group) belongs to the gods, the third to the Dānavas and the rest; the remaining ones are to be known as belonging to the (four) classes — thus all have been declared.

devāschaitānyajante vai sarvajñāneṣvavasthitān / āśramaśca yajantyenāṃścatvārastu yathākramam

And the gods indeed worship these, who are established in all (forms of) knowledge; and the four stages of life (āśramas) worship them, each in due order.

sarve varṇā yajantyenāṃścatvārastu yathāgamam / tathā saṃkarajātyaśca mlecchāścāpi yajanti vai

All the classes worship these four in accordance with tradition; and likewise those of mixed birth, and even barbarians (mleccha) do worship (them).

pitṛṃstu yo yajedbhaktyā pitaraḥ prīṇayanti te / pitaraḥ puṣṭikāmasya prajākāmasya vā punaḥ

When one worships the fathers with devotion, those fathers are pleased; and again, for one who desires prosperity or who desires offspring, the fathers—

puṣṭiṃ prajāṃ tu svargaṃ ca prayacchanti pitāmahāḥ / devakāryādapi tathā pitṛkāryaṃ viśiṣyate

the grandfathers grant prosperity, offspring, and heaven; and thus the rite for the fathers is more excellent even than the rite for the gods.

devatānāṃ hi pitaraḥ pūrvamāpyāyanaṃ smṛtāḥ / na hi yogagatiḥ sūkṣmā pitṝṇāṃ jñāyate naraiḥ

For the fathers are held to be the prior nourishment of the gods. Indeed the subtle yogic course of the fathers is not known by men,

pāvanaṃ hyuttamaṃ proktaṃ devānāṃ pitṛbhiḥ saha / yeṣāṃ dāsyanti piṇḍāṃstrīnbāndhavā nāmagotrataḥ

is declared the highest purifier for the gods together with the fathers. Those to whom kinsmen will give the three rice-balls, by name and lineage,

bhūmau kuśottarāyāṃ ca apasavyavidhānataḥ / sarvatra varttamānāste piṇḍāḥ prīṇanti vai pitṝn

on the ground, on a spread of kuśa grass, according to the rule of (turning) leftward — those rice-balls, present everywhere, do gratify the fathers.

yadāhāro bhavejjanturāhāraḥ so 'sya jāyate / yathā goṣṭhe pranaṣṭāṃ vai vatso vindati mātaram

Whatever food a creature (then) has, that becomes its food. Just as in the cow-pen a calf finds its lost mother,

tathā taṃ nayate mantro janturyatrāvatiṣṭhati / nāmagotraṃ ca mantraṃ ca dattamannaṃ nayanti tam

so the mantra leads it (the offering) to where the creature abides; the name and lineage, the mantra, and the food that is given lead (it) to him.

pitṝṇamādisargetu lokānāmakṣayārthinām / ityete pitaraścaiva lokā duhitarastathā

dauhitrā yajamānaśca proktāścaiva mayānagha / kīrttitāḥ pitaraste vai tava putra yathākramam

the daughters' sons and the sacrificer — these have been declared by me, O sinless one; those fathers have been proclaimed to you, my son, in due order.

śaṃyuruvāca aho divyastvayā tāta pitṛsargastu kīrtitaḥ / lokā duhitaraścaiva dohitrāśca śrutāstathā

Śaṃyu said: Ah, divine indeed, father, is the creation of the fathers that you have proclaimed; and the worlds, the daughters, and the daughters' sons have likewise been heard (by me).

The gifts along with purity have been proclaimed, and their fruits, and their imperishableness, and the twice-born too — all this has been set forth. From this day onward I shall do all this exactly so.
