Brahma Purana — Chapter 238

BrP 238.1

sṛjate tu guṇān sattvaṃ kṣetrajñas tv adhitiṣṭhati guṇān vikriyataḥ sarvān udāsīnavad īśvaraḥ //

Sattva creates the guṇas, but the knower of the field presides (over them); the Lord (remains) as if indifferent to all the guṇas as they undergo change.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BrP 238.2

svabhāvayuktaṃ tat sarvaṃ yad imān sṛjate guṇān ūrṇanābhir yathā sūtraṃ sṛjate tad guṇāṃs tathā //

All that is bound up with its own nature, in that it creates these guṇas; as the spider (spins out) its thread, so does that (nature) create the guṇas.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BrP 238.3

pravṛttā na nivartante pravṛttir nopalabhyate evam eke vyavasyanti nivṛttim iti cāpare //

(Beings) once set going do not turn back, and (the origin of) activity is not to be discerned: so some conclude, while others (declare) cessation.

BrP 238.4

ubhayaṃ saṃpradhāryaitad adhyavasyed yathāmati anenaiva vidhānena bhaved vai saṃśayo mahān //

Having weighed both of these, one should decide according to one's own understanding; by just this procedure a great doubt indeed arises.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

BrP 238.5

anādinidhano hy ātmā taṃ buddhvā viharen naraḥ akrudhyann aprahṛṣyaṃś ca nityaṃ vigatamatsaraḥ //

For the self is without beginning or end; knowing it, a man should go about, not growing angry, not exulting, ever free of envy.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BrP 238.6

ity evaṃ hṛdaye sarvo buddhicintāmayaṃ dṛḍham anityaṃ sukham āsīnam aśocyaṃ chinnasaṃśayaḥ //

So (should) everything in the heart (be seen as) firm, made of intellect and thought, impermanent, resting in ease, not to be grieved over — (thus) one whose doubt is cut off.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

BrP 238.7

tarayet pracyutāṃ pṛthvīṃ yathā pūrṇāṃ nadīṃ narāḥ avagāhya ca vidvāṃso viprā lolam imaṃ tathā //

As men would cross the earth, when it has given way, like a river in flood, so too the learned brahmins, having plunged in, (cross) this unsteady (world).

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

BrP 238.8

na tu tapyati vai vidvān sthale carati tattvavit evaṃ vicintya cātmānaṃ kevalaṃ jñānam ātmanaḥ //

But the learned one is not scorched; the knower of the truth walks on dry ground. Thus having reflected upon the self — knowledge of the self alone (remains).

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

BrP 238.9

tāṃ tu buddhvā naraḥ sargaṃ bhūtānām āgatiṃ gatim samaceṣṭaś ca vai samyag labhate śamam uttamam //

But having understood that — the creation of beings, their coming and their going — a man of even conduct fully attains the highest peace.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

BrP 238.10

etad dvijanmasāmagryaṃ brāhmaṇasya viśeṣataḥ ātmajñānasamasnehaparyāptaṃ tatparāyaṇam //

This is the whole equipment of the twice-born, and of the brahmin especially: complete in knowledge of the self and in even-handed affection, having that as its highest resort.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

BrP 238.11

tattvaṃ buddhvā bhaved buddhaḥ kim anyad buddhalakṣaṇam vijñāyaitad vimucyante kṛtakṛtyā manīṣiṇaḥ //

Having understood the truth, one becomes awakened; what other mark of the awakened is there? Having known this, the wise, their task accomplished, are set free.

BrP 238.12

na bhavati viduṣāṃ mahad bhayaṃ yad aviduṣāṃ sumahad bhayaṃ paratra nahi gatir adhikāsti kasyacid bhavati hi yā viduṣaḥ sanātanī

There is no great fear for those who know, that very great fear in the world beyond which is the lot of the ignorant; for no one has a course higher than that eternal one which belongs to the knower.

loke mātaram asūyate naras tatra devam anirīkṣya śocate tatra cet kuśalo na śocate ye vidus tad ubhayaṃ kṛtākṛtam

In the world a man resents his mother; there, not looking upon the god, he grieves; but if he is skilled therein he does not grieve — (such are) those who know both, the done and the not-done.
