Knowing 'what I am, that I am,' you ought not to worry; moreover, the waters are goddesses and mothers, and fire too is your father-in-law — having settled this in your mind, do not be despondent, daughter-in-law.

As to what you said, that the waters are mothers — how, my lord, having become the wife of your son Agni, can I be both mother and wife? This is contradictory, (that I should flood him) in the form of water.

yo 'syāṃ prajātaḥ sa tu putra eva sā tasya mātaiva na saṃśayo 'tra tasmād vadanti śrutitattvavijñāḥ sā naiva yoṣit tanaye 'bhijāte

He who is born of her is simply a son, and she is simply his mother — there is no doubt in this; therefore those who know the truth of scripture say that she is not a wife at all once a son has been born.
