"In the gods' garden Nandana we shall enjoy divine pleasures together with lovely women; then, our task accomplished, we shall go with Indra each to his own place — and let the guarding of the weapons be done by you; so give consent, for you are able both to protect and to hold (them)." Hearing that speech, Dadhīci spoke thus to the gods: "So be it," though restrained by his wife, who was of affectionate disposition: "What is (the good) of this business of the gods, which works against (you)?"

"Those who know the scriptures, who are fixed on the highest goal, whose attachment to the doings of worldly existence is gone — what have they to do with a passion for others' affairs, sage, by which there is no happiness at all either here or hereafter?

"They who hate the gods (will) come to hate (you). Listen, best of brahmins: once the place has been granted, then, lord of sages, if the weapons are lost or carried off, the gods grow angry and become your enemies.

"If there is the power to give goods, then indeed they should be given to one who asks — what is there to deliberate? If not, good men should do others' business with words, with thoughts, and likewise with deeds. This very keeping of another's property is rejected by the good — abandon it at once, my beloved." The brahmin, hearing his dear wife's speech thus, said this to his fair-browed wife: "Formerly, good lady, having gained the gods' consent, (to say) the word 'no' brings me no ease." Hearing this uttered by her husband — "apart from fate there is nothing else that men can accomplish" — while his dear wife stood silent, those best of gods, having deposited their exceedingly brilliant weapons,

And those gods, not seeing her, quickly, in fear of her, said to the brahmin: "Do it!" Lovingly he gave up the life-breaths, hard to give up: "Make use of this body as you please; let all the gods be gratified with my bones — but what use is (there) in the body?" Having said this, he sat fixed in the lotus posture, serene with the light of his eyes set on the tip of his nose, and slowly, by the yoga of opening the middle (channel), led the breath together with the fire into the interior of the small space (of the heart).
