But seeing that fawn, helpless, being borne along by the current, cast away, the royal sage Bharata, out of compassion, like a kinsman, took it up and, (thinking) "its mother is dead," brought it to his hermitage.

Now for him, who had formed a strong sense of "mine" upon this fawn, day after day, through his constant preoccupation with nourishing, guarding, fondling and pleasing it, his personal observances (niyamas) together with his restraints (yamas), and his service of the Supreme Person and the rest, being severed one by one within the course of a few days, all indeed came to an end.

Thus, with his heart agitated by longings that could not be fulfilled, that ascetic of yoga was made to fall away from his undertaking of yoga — and from the practice characterized by worship of the Lord — by his own begun karma appearing in the form of a deer's fawn. For how else could there be such attachment to a fawn of another species, in one who had earlier abandoned his own hard-to-abandon offspring born of his heart, since (such attachment) is directly opposed to the highest good? While this royal sage Bharata, whose undertaking of yoga had thus been struck down by an obstacle, took no account of himself because of his engrossment in the feeding, guarding, gratifying and fondling of the deer's young one, time — hard to escape, of dreadful swiftness — came upon (him) like a snake upon a mouse's hole.
