The king said: Great sage, how does this diversity of the world come about?

Now, then, in the case of irreligion, which is characterized by what is prohibited, likewise, owing to the difference in the doer's faith, the fruit of the act becomes different. For the courses that arise for those who have acted out their desires under beginningless ignorance — courses that are marked as the transformation of that (irreligion) — are thousands in number; of these we shall describe the principal ones.

The king said: The hells, my lord — are they particular regions, or are they outside the three worlds, or in the space between?

The sage said: In the space between the three worlds indeed, in the southern quarter, below the earth and above the water; there dwell the hosts of forefathers, the Agniṣvāttas and the rest, who in that quarter, with utmost concentration, invoke blessings — which do come true — for their own lineages.

There indeed the lord Vaivasvata, king of the forefathers, when creatures who have died are brought to his domain by his men, inflicts punishment together with his retinue, exactly according to the blameworthy fault of their acts, never overstepping the Lord's command.

There some reckon the hells to be twenty-one. Now, O king, we shall enumerate them for you by name, form and characteristic: Tāmisra, Andhatāmisra, Raurava, Mahāraurava, Kumbhīpāka, Kālasūtra, Asipatravana, Sūkaramukha, Andhakūpa, Kṛmibhojana, Sandaṃśa, Taptasūrmi, Vajrakaṇṭaka-śālmalī, Vaitaraṇī, Pūyoda, Prāṇarodha, Viśasana, Lālābhakṣa, Sārameyādana, Avīci, Ayaḥpāna; and further Kṣārakardama, Rakṣogaṇa-bhojana, Śūlaprota, Dandaśūka, Avaṭa-nirodhana, Paryāvartana, Sūcīmukha — thus twenty-eight hells, lands of manifold torments.

Among these, he who carries off another's wealth, children and wife is bound with the noose of time and forcibly cast down by Yama's exceedingly terrifying men into the hell Tāmisra; there the creature, tormented with torments such as starvation, denial of water, beating with rods and threatening, and reduced to utter wretchedness, from time to time faints outright in that place which is nearly all darkness.

In just the same way, into Andhatāmisra (goes) he who, having deceived a man, enjoys his wife and the rest; there the embodied one, being flung down and set in torment, becomes through the pain deprived of understanding and deprived of sight, like a tree whose root is being cut; therefore they call it Andhatāmisra ('blind darkness').

Those creatures who were injured by him here — in the next world, when he has reached Yama's torment, they themselves, having become rurus, injure him in the same way; therefore they call it Raurava. 'Ruru' is a designation for a creature crueller than a snake.

Just so is Mahāraurava, where the rurus called kravyādas ('flesh-eaters') destroy with (their eating of) his flesh the man who has fallen there — one who is a mere feeder of his body.

But one who here injures a brāhmaṇa is thrust into the hell called Kālasūtra, a copper-plated threshing floor ten thousand yojanas in circumference, heated intensely from above by the sun and from below by fire; burning within and without his body from hunger and thirst as well, he sits, lies down, writhes, stands up and runs about for as many thousands of years as there are hairs on a beast's body.

But one who here, not in an emergency, has departed from the path of his own Veda and taken up heresy — him they drive into (the forest) Asipatravana and beat with a whip; there, as he runs this way and that, all his limbs cut by the double-edged sword-blade leaves of the palm grove, crying "Alas, I am slain!", he faints from the extreme pain and falls at every step: the destroyer of his own duty enjoys the fruit that follows upon heresy.

But whatever king or king's officer here inflicts punishment upon one not deserving punishment, or bodily punishment upon a brāhmaṇa, that most sinful one falls in the next world into the hell Sūkaramukha, where the exceedingly strong (agents of Yama) crush his limbs just as sugarcane is crushed here; crying out with a piteous voice, at times he faints and becomes senseless, just like those seized here whose guilt has not been established.

But one whose own livelihood has been provided by the Supreme Person, and who, though he can distinguish the pain of others, inflicts pain upon creatures whose livelihood has been arranged by the Lord and who cannot distinguish the pain of others — he, by that hostility, falls in the next world into (the hell) Andhakūpa; there he is assailed on all sides by those very creatures — beasts, deer, birds, reptiles, and gnats, lice, bugs, flies and the rest, whoever were injured (by him) — and in the darkness, deprived of the ease of sleep and finding no place to stay, he wanders about, as a living being does in a wretched body.

But one who here in any way speaks falsely in giving testimony, in the exchange of goods, or in the matter of a gift — he, having died, is hurled headfirst in the hell Avīcimat from a mountain summit a hundred yojanas high, with no foothold, where the stony surface of the ground shines like water — that is (the hell) Avīcimat; his body being shattered into sesame-sized pieces, yet not dying, he is taken up again and falls again.

But if a brāhmaṇa, a kṣatriya or a vaiśya who is a drinker of soma, or his wife, drinks liquor, or even one who is under a vow does so out of heedlessness — when they have been led to hell, (the servants of Yama), treading with a foot on their chest, pour into their mouths molten iron liquefied by fire.

And further, one who here, out of self-conceit, being himself low, does not honour a superior endowed with birth, austerity, learning, good conduct, class and stage of life — he, dead even while alive, having died, is cast headfirst into the hell Kṣārakardama and indeed undergoes torments without end.

But those men here who sacrifice with a human sacrifice, and those women who eat human victims — them the hosts of Rākṣasas in Yama's abode, slain like the sacrificial animals themselves, torment; and like butchers, cutting them with an axe, they drink their blood and dance and sing, exulting, as the man-eaters do here.

But those who here, in the forest or in a village, having won the confidence of guiltless creatures that come to them trustingly, torture them for sport, impaling them on spikes and threads and the like while they wish to live — they too, having died, in the tortures of Yama have their own selves impaled on spikes and the rest, and, afflicted by hunger and thirst, struck this way and that by herons and vultures and the like with sharp beaks, they remember their own sin.

But he who here thinks himself rich, is full of egoism, looks askance (at others), is suspicious of everyone on all sides, whose heart and face are dried up by the anxiety of spending and losing wealth, who attains no peace and guards his money like a demon — he too, after death, possessed by the taint of getting, increasing and hoarding it, falls into the hell called Sūcīmukha, where indeed the officers of the king of dharma stitch that sinful man, the money-hoarder, all over his limbs with threads, like weavers.

Hells of this kind exist in Yama's abode by hundreds and by thousands, and into all of them, in turn, enter all those who walk in unrighteousness — whether they have been mentioned here or not mentioned, O lord of the earth; and just so those who follow dharma (enter) elsewhere. But here, in rebirth, they enter (again) with the remainders of both.

The path marked by cessation (from action) was explained at the very beginning. Just so great is the egg-shell (of the universe), which is sung of in the Purāṇas as divided in fourteen ways. That which has been described is the grossest form of the Lord Nārāyaṇa, the Great Person himself, made of the qualities of his own māyā. He who, being reverent, recites it, hears it, or has it heard, he — his understanding purified by faith and devotion — knows what is to be sung of the Lord, the Supreme Self, though (he be) ungraspable.

The arrangement of the earth, its islands, its continents, rivers, mountains, sky, oceans, the nether regions, the directions, the hells, the constellations and the worlds — all this has been sung by me to you, O king: the wondrous gross body of the Lord, the abode of the whole multitude of living beings.
