Śrī Śuka said: Some say that ten thousand yojanas below the sun, Svarbhānu moves like a star (planet). He, though himself the lowest of the asuras, the son of Siṃhikā, obtained immortality and the status of a planet by the Lord's mercy, though not deserving of it. His birth and deeds, dear one, we shall relate later.

That disc of the burning sun—they say it is ten thousand yojanas in extent; the moon's, twelve thousand; Rāhu's, thirteen thousand. He, out of persisting enmity, being the one who causes their eclipsing, rushes at the sun and moon at the (full and new) moon junctures.

Having noticed that, the Lord's beloved weapon named Sudarśana, employed by the Lord for the protection of both, unbearable by reason of its heat, continually revolving—(Rāhu), having faced it, stands only for a moment, and being agitated, with trembling heart, turns back from a distance. People call this the eclipse.

In these subterranean heavens, which surpass heaven itself in pleasures, enjoyments, power, bliss, prosperity and opulence, with their richly abundant mansions, gardens, pleasure-grounds and resorts, dwell the Daityas, Dānavas and the sons of Kadru—householders always joyful, with devoted wives, children, kinsmen, friends and attendants, their desires unobstructed even by the Lord, delighting in magic.

In these, O great king, shine cities built by Maya the magician, adorned with excellent dwellings of the lords of the caverns—with wondrous palaces, ramparts, gateways, assembly halls, temples, courtyards, shrines and the like fashioned from the choicest select gems, and with artificial grounds thronged with pairs of Nāgas and Asuras, and with pigeons, parrots and mynas.

Now in Atala dwells the Asura Bala, son of Maya, by whom were produced here ninety-six magic arts, some of which magicians even now employ. And from his mouth, as he yawned, there arose three classes of women: svairiṇīs, kāminīs and puṃścalīs. These, indeed, having fortified a man who has entered the cavern-dwelling with a fluid called hāṭaka, sport with him at will by their coquettish glances, loving smiles, conversation, embraces and the like; and when it has been consumed, a man, fancying himself to have the strength of ten thousand great elephants, boasts, "I am the lord, I am perfected," like one blinded by intoxication.

Below that, in Vitala, the divine Hara, lord of Hāṭaka, surrounded by his own attendants and hosts of bhūtas—Bhava—remains united with Bhavānī for the furthering of Prajāpati's creation. From there flows the foremost of rivers named Hāṭakī, (arisen) from the virility of the two, Bhava and Bhavānī. There Fire, fanned by the wind, blazing, drinks it with force, and the gold called hāṭaka which he spits out—that the men, together with the women, wear as ornament in the harems of the Asura lords.

Below that, in Sutala, is the widely renowned, saintly Bali, son of Virocana, whom the Lord—having become embodied from Aditi, wishing to do a kindness to great Indra—dispossessed of the three worlds in the form of a dwarf brahmacārin, and whom by the Lord's very compassion he installed again (in Sutala). Endowed with a prosperity so abundant as does not exist even among Indra and the others, worshipping by his own duty that very Lord who is worthy of worship, he dwells there even now, free from fear.

This (lordship) is certainly not the direct fruit of (his) gift of land — that lordship over a dwelling in the caverns — a gift bestowed with supreme faith, with a mind concentrated in highest reverence, upon the Lord Vāsudeva, who is the Supreme Self, the very self-being of all the hosts of living creatures, the most purifying of holy places, a worthy recipient come (before him) — a gift which is itself directly the door to liberation.

Below that, in Mahātala, is the group called Krodhavaśa, of the many-headed serpents descended from Kadru, chief among them Kuhaka, Takṣaka, Kāliya, Suṣeṇa and others, possessing great coils; constantly trembling before Garuḍa, the sovereign of the king of birds, who bears the Person, they nevertheless sport, at times heedless through attachment to their own wives, children, friends and families.

Below that, in Rasātala, dwell the Daiteyas and Dānavas called Paṇis — the Nivātakavacas, the Kāleyas, and the dwellers in Hiraṇyapura — foes of the gods, mighty in power by birth and greatly daring; but the arrogance of their strength was struck down by the splendour of Hari alone, the Lord who is the power behind all the worlds, and so they live like snakes lodged in holes. Indeed they are afraid of Indra because of the words, in the form of mantra-syllables, of Saramā acting as Indra's messenger.

Below that, in Pātāla, dwell the lords of the world of the nāgas, headed by Vāsuki — Śaṅkha, Kulika, Mahāśaṅkha, Śveta, Dhanañjaya, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Śaṅkhacūḍa, Kambala, Aśvatara, Devadatta and the rest — possessing great coils and great wrath; and on the hoods of those who have five, seven, ten, a hundred and a thousand heads there are set great shining gems, which by their own radiance dispel the mass of darkness in the caverns of Pātāla.
