śrī-śuka uvāca atrānuvarṇyate 'bhīkṣṇaṃ viśvātmā bhagavān hariḥ yasya prasāda-jo brahmā rudraḥ krodha-samudbhavaḥ

Śrī Śuka said: Here the Lord Hari, the Self of the universe, is described again and again—he from whose grace Brahmā was born, and from whose anger Rudra arose.

tvaṃ tu rājan mariṣyeti paśu-buddhim imāṃ jahi na jātaḥ prāg abhūto 'dya deha-vat tvaṃ na naṅkṣyasi

But you, O king, abandon this animal notion, 'I shall die.' You were not born before and did not come into being today, as the body did; you will not perish.

na bhaviṣyasi bhūtvā tvaṃ putra-pautrādi-rūpavān bījāṅkura-vad dehāder vyatirikto yathānalaḥ

You will not, having come into being, continue on in the form of sons and grandsons and the rest, as with seed and sprout; you are distinct from the body and the rest, as fire is (from the fuel).

svapne yathā śiraś-chedaṃ pañcatvādy ātmanaḥ svayam yasmāt paśyati dehasya tata ātmā hy ajo 'maraḥ

Since in a dream one himself sees the beheading and death and so on of one's own body, therefore the self is indeed unborn and undying.

ghaṭe bhinne ghaṭākāśa ākāśaḥ syād yathā purā evaṃ dehe mṛte jīvo brahma sampadyate punaḥ

When a pot is broken, the space in the pot becomes space as it was before; likewise, when the body dies, the living being attains Brahman again.

manaḥ sṛjati vai dehān guṇān karmāṇi cātmanaḥ tan manaḥ sṛjate māyā tato jīvasya saṃsṛtiḥ

It is the mind that produces bodies, and (also) the modes and the actions of the self; that mind is produced by māyā, and from that comes the transmigration of the living being.

snehādhiṣṭhāna-varty-agni- saṃyogo yāvad īyate tāvad dīpasya dīpatvam evaṃ deha-kṛto bhavaḥ rajaḥ-sattva-tamo-vṛttyā jāyate 'tha vinaśyati

As long as the combination of oil, a stand, a wick and fire is maintained, so long is there lamp-hood in a lamp; in the same way, existence caused by the body arises through the working of passion, goodness and darkness, and then perishes.

SB 12 5.8

na tatrātmā svayaṃ-jyotir yo vyaktāvyaktayoḥ paraḥ ākāśa iva cādhāro dhruvo 'nantopamas tataḥ

Therein the self is not (so produced) — the self-luminous one, who is beyond both the manifest and the unmanifest, who like space is the support, fixed, and comparable to the endless; therefore (it is not destroyed).

evam ātmānam ātma-stham ātmanaivāmṛśa prabho buddhyānumāna-garbhiṇyā vāsudevānucintayā

Thus, O lord, reflect upon the self that abides in the self, by the self, through contemplation of Vāsudeva pregnant with intelligence and inference.

codito vipra-vākyena na tvāṃ dhakṣyati takṣakaḥ mṛtyavo nopadhakṣyanti mṛtyūnāṃ mṛtyum īśvaram

Takṣaka, urged on by the brāhmaṇa's words, will not burn you; the (various) deaths will not burn up the Lord, who is the death of deaths.

ahaṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma brahmāhaṃ paramaṃ padam evaṃ samīkṣya cātmānam ātmany ādhāya niṣkale

"I am Brahman, the supreme abode; Brahman am I, the highest state" — thus having discerned, and having placed the self in the undivided Self,

daśantaṃ takṣakaṃ pāde lelihānaṃ viṣānanaiḥ na drakṣyasi śarīraṃ ca viśvaṃ ca pṛthag ātmanaḥ

you will not see Takṣaka biting your foot and licking with his venomous mouths, nor the body, nor the universe as separate from the self.

etat te kathitaṃ tāta yad ātmā pṛṣṭavān nṛpa harer viśvātmanaś ceṣṭāṃ kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi

This, dear one, has been told to you, O king, what you yourself asked about — the activity of Hari, the Self of the universe. What more do you wish to hear?
