Atharvaveda Samhita — Kanda 4 — Chapter 21

AV 4 21.1

ā gāvo agmann uta bhadram akrant sīdantu goṣṭhe raṇayantv asme | prajāvatīḥ pururūpā iha syur indrāya pūrvīr uṣaso duhānāḥ

The cows have come, and they have made what is auspicious; let them sit down in the stall, let them take pleasure with us. May they be here rich in offspring, of many forms, milking for Indra through many dawns.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

The kine have come and brought good fortune: let them rest in the cow-pen and be happy near us. Here let them stay prolific, many-coloured, and yield through many morns their milk for Indra.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)

AV 4 21.2

indro yajvane gṛṇate ca śikṣata uped dadāti na svaṃ muṣāyati | bhūyobhūyo rayim id asya vardhayann abhinne khilye ni dadhāti devayum

Indra gives to him who sacrifices and who sings and seeks to serve; he does indeed bestow, he does not rob (him of) his own. Increasing ever more his wealth, he sets the god-devoted man on unbroken level ground.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

Indra aids him who offers sacrifice and praise: he takes not what is his, and gives him more thereto. Increasing ever more and ever more his wealth, he makes the pious dwell within unbroken bounds.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)

AV 4 21.3

na tā naśanti na dabhāti taskaro nāsām āmitro vyathir ā dadharṣati | devāṃś ca yābhir yajate dadāti ca jyog it tābhiḥ sacate gopatiḥ saha

They are not lost, no thief harms them, no hostile one dares to assail them with injury; with them he sacrifices to the gods and gives (gifts): long indeed does the cattle-lord consort with them.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

These are ne'er lost, no robber ever injures them: no evil-minded foe attempts to harass them. The master of the kine lives a long life with these, the Cows whereby he pours his gifts and serves the Gods.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)

AV 4 21.4

na tā arvā reṇukakāṭo 'śnute na saṃskṛtatram upa yanti tā abhi | urugāyam abhayaṃ tasya tā anu gāvo martasya vi caranti yajvanaḥ

No dust-raising steed overtakes them, nor do they go to the slaughtering-place; the cows of that mortal sacrificer roam over his wide-ranging, fearless (pasture).

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

The charger with his dusty brow o'ertakes them not, and never to the shambles do they take their way. These Cows, the cattle of the pious worshipper, roam over wide- spread pasture where no danger is.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)

AV 4 21.5

gāvo bhago gāva indro ma ichād gāva somasya prathamasya bhakṣaḥ | imā yā gāvaḥ sa janāsa indra ichāmi hṛdā manasā cid indram

The cows are Bhaga, the cows — may Indra desire (them) for me; the cows are the draught of the first soma. These which are the cows, they, O men, are Indra: with heart and with mind indeed I desire Indra.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

To me the Cows seem Bhaga, they seem Indra, they seem a portion of the first poured Soma. These present Cows, they, O ye men, are Indra. I long for Indra with my heart and spirit.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)

AV 4 21.6

yūyaṃ gāvo medayatha kṛśaṃ cid aśrīraṃ cit kṛṇuthā supratīkam | bhadraṃ gṛhaṃ kṛṇutha bhadravāco bṛhad vo vaya ucyate sabhāsu

You, O cows, make fat even the lean one; even the ugly one you make fair of face. You make the house auspicious, O you of auspicious voice; great is your vigour spoken of in the assemblies.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

O Cows, ye fatten e'en the worn and wasted, and make the unlovely beautiful to look on. Prosper my home, ye with auspicious voices! Your power is magnified in our assemblies.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)

AV 4 21.7

prajāvatīḥ sūyavase ruśantīḥ śuddhā apaḥ suprapāṇe pibantīḥ | mā va stena īśata māghaśaṃsaḥ pari vo rudrasya hetir vṛṇaktu

Rich in offspring, gleaming in good pasture, drinking pure water at a good watering-place — let no thief have power over you, nor any evil-speaker; may Rudra's missile pass you by.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

In goodly pasturage, bright-hued, prolific, drinking pure water at fair drinking-places, Never be thief or sinful man your master, and may the dart of Rudra still avoid you!

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1895–96)
