Agni Purana — Chapter 376

AgP 376.1

:e ity āgneye mahāpurāṇe samādhirnāma pañcasaptatyadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ :p 330 chapter {376} :ś atha ṣaṭsaptatyadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ brahmajñānaṃ agnir uvāca brahmajñānaṃ pravakṣyāmi saṃsārājñānamuktaye ayamātmā parṃ brahma ahamasmīti mucyate

Thus in the Āgneya Mahāpurāṇa, the three hundred and seventy-fifth chapter, called "Samādhi." — Now the three hundred and seventy-sixth chapter: The Knowledge of Brahman. Agni said: I shall declare the knowledge of Brahman, for release from the ignorance that is transmigration. This self is the supreme Brahman; (thinking) "I am (that)," one is freed.

deha ātmā na bhavati dṛsyatvācca ghaṭādivat prasapte maraṇe dehādātmānyo jñāyate dhruvaṃ

The body is not the self, since it is an object of perception, like a pot and so forth; in deep sleep and in death the self is certainly known as other than the body.

AgP 376.3

dehaḥ sa cedavyavaharedvikāryādisannibhaḥ cakṣurādīnīndriyāṇi nātmā vai karaṇaṃ tvataḥ

And if that (self) were the body, it would not function, being like things that are modifiable and so forth. The eye and the rest, the sense-organs, are not the self, for they are (mere) instruments.

AgP 376.4

mano dhīrapi ātmā na dīpavat karaṇaṃ tvataḥ prāṇo 'pyātmā na bhavati suṣupte citprabhāvataḥ

Mind and intellect too are not the self, for they are instruments, like a lamp. Breath also is not the self, because consciousness shines forth in deep sleep.

AgP 376.5

jāgratsvapne ca caitanyaṃ saṅkīrṇatvānna budhyate vijñānarahitaḥ prāṇaḥ suṣupte jñāyate yataḥ

In waking and dream, consciousness is not discerned because of (its) being mixed (with them); for in deep sleep the breath is known to be devoid of cognition.

AgP 376.6

ato nātmendriyaṃ tasmādintriyādikamātmanaḥ ahaṅkāro 'pi naivātmā dehavadvyabhicārataḥ

Therefore the sense-organ is not the self; hence the senses and the rest belong to the self. The ego too is not the self, since, like the body, it is inconstant.

AgP 376.7

uktebhyo vyatirikto 'yamātmā sarvahṛdi sthitaḥ sarvadraṣṭā ca bhoktā ca naktamujjvaladīpavat

Distinct from those (things) mentioned, this self abides in the heart of all, the seer of all and the enjoyer, like a lamp blazing in the night.

AgP 376.8

samādhyārambhakāle ca evaṃ sañcintayenmuniḥ yato brahmaṇa ākāśaṃ khādvāyurvāyuto 'nalaḥ

And at the time of commencing samādhi the sage should reflect thus: from Brahman (arose) space, from space wind, from wind fire,

AgP 376.9

agnerāpo jalātpṛthvī tataḥ sūkṣmaṃ śarīrakaṃ apañcīkṛtabhūtebhya āsan pañcīkṛtānyataḥ

from fire water, from water earth; thence the subtle body. From the non-quintuplicated elements arose the quintuplicated ones,

AgP 376.10

:p 331 sthūlaṃ śarīraṃ dhyātvāsmāllayaṃ brahmaṇi cintayet pañcīkṛtāni bhūtāni tatkāryañca virāṭsmṛtam

and from these the gross body. Having meditated (on this), one should contemplate its dissolution in Brahman. The quintuplicated elements and their effect are called Virāṭ.

AgP 376.11

etat sthūlaṃ śarīraṃ hi ātmano jñānakalpitaṃ indriyair atha vijñānaṃ dhīrā jāgaritaṃ viduḥ

For this gross body is a construction of the self's knowledge; and the wise know cognition (arising) through the senses to be the waking state.

AgP 376.12

viśvastadabhimānī syāt trayametadakārakaṃ apañcīkṛtabhūtāni tatkāryaṃ liṅgamucyate

Viśva would be (the self) identifying itself with that; these three are without agency. The non-quintuplicated elements and their effect are called the liṅga (subtle body).

AgP 376.13

saṃyuktaṃ saptadaśabhirhiraṇyagarbhasaṃjñitaṃ śarīramātmanaḥ sūkṣmaṃ liṅgamityabhidhīyate

Joined with the seventeen (constituents), it is named Hiraṇyagarbha; the subtle body of the self is termed the liṅga.

AgP 376.14

jāgratsaṃskārajaḥ svapnaḥ pratyayo viṣayātmakaḥ ātmā tadupamānī styāttaijaso hy aprapañcataḥ

Dream is born of the impressions of waking; it is a cognition consisting of (its own) objects. The self identifying itself with that would be Taijasa, since there is no (external) manifest world (there).

AgP 376.15

sthūlasūkṣmaśarīrākhyadvayasyaikaṃ hi kāraṇaṃ ātmā jñānañca sābhāsaṃ tadadhyāhṛtamucyate

Of the two, called the gross and the subtle body, there is indeed one cause; the self, and knowledge together with its reflection — that is said to be superimposed (upon it).

AgP 376.16

na sannāsanna sadasadetatsāvayavaṃ na tat nirgatāvayavaṃ neti nābhinnaṃ bhinnameva ca

It is not existent, not non-existent, not both existent and non-existent; it is not possessed of parts, nor is it without parts, nor is it non-different, nor different.

AgP 376.17

bhinnābhinnaṃ hy anirvācyaṃ bandhasaṃsārakārakaṃ ekaṃ sa brahma vijñānāt prāptaṃ naiva ca karmabhiḥ

For (it is) both different and non-different, indescribable, the maker of bondage and transmigration; that brahman is one, attained by knowledge and not at all by works.

AgP 376.18

sarvātmanā hīndriyāṇāṃ saṃhāraḥ kāraṇātmanāṃ buddheḥ sthānaṃ suṣuptaṃ syāttaddvayasyābhimānavān

For the withdrawal of the senses, which have (their) cause as (their) self, in every respect, (and) the abode of the intellect, would be deep sleep; (he who is) possessed of the sense of 'I' with respect to that pair —

— (that) is the wise (prājña) self; and these three are the letter M, which is called the praṇava (Om): this is the letter A, that the letter U, and this indeed the letter M.

ahaṃ sākṣī ca cinmātro jāgratsvapnādikasya ca nājñānañcaiva tatkāryaṃ saṃsārādikabandhanaṃ

And I am the witness, pure consciousness, of waking, dream and the rest; and (I am) not ignorance, nor its effect, the bondage of transmigration and the rest.

nityaśuddhabandhamuktasatyamānandamadvayaṃ :p 332 brahmāhamasmyahaṃ brahma paraṃ jyotirvimukta oṃ

Eternal, pure, freed from bondage, real, bliss, without a second — I am brahman, I am brahman, the supreme light, liberated. Om.

AgP 376.22

ahaṃ brahma paraṃ jñānaṃ samādhirbandhaghātakaḥ ciramānandakaṃ brahma satyaṃ jñānamanantakaṃ

I am brahman, the supreme knowledge; (this) concentration is the destroyer of bondage; brahman is lasting bliss, real, knowledge, endless.

AgP 376.23

ayamātmā parambrahma tad brahma tvamasīti ca guruṇā bodhito jīvo hy ahaṃ brahmāsmi vāhyataḥ

"This self is the supreme brahman," and "You are that brahman" — the individual soul, thus instructed by the teacher, (says) "I am brahman," outwardly (too).

so 'sāvādityapuruṣaḥ so 'sāvahamakhaṇḍa oṃ mucyate 'sārasaṃsārādbrahmajño brahma tadbhavet

That one there, the person in the sun — that one there is I, the undivided. Om. The knower of brahman is released from the sapless round of transmigration; he would become brahman.
