Agni Purana — Chapter 334

AgP 334.1

:e ity āgneye mahāpurāṇe samavṛttanirūpaṇaṃ nāma trayastriṃśadadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ chapter {334} :ś atha catustriṃśadadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ prastāranirūpaṇam agnir uvāca chando 'tra siddhaṃ gāthā syāt pāde sarva gurau tathā prastāra ādyagāthonaḥ paratulyo 'tha pūrvagaḥ

Thus, in the Āgneya Mahāpurāṇa, the chapter called the exposition of even metres, the three hundred thirty-third chapter. [Chapter 334] Now the three hundred thirty-fourth chapter: the exposition of the prastāra (permutation). Agni said: Here metre is established. It is a gāthā when in a pāda all (the syllables) are heavy. The prastāra (proceeds thus): the first is the gāthā less (one), equal to the next, and then what precedes (is set down).

:न् १ ग्रहवसो वसादिति ग॥ २ चण्डवृष्टिप्रयानक इति ट॥ :प् १९५ नष्टमध्ये समे ऽङ्केनः समे ऽर्ध विषमे गुरुः प्रतिलोमगुणं नाद्यं द्विरुद्दिष्टग एकनुत्

:n 1 grahavaso vasāditi ga.. 2 caṇḍavṛṣṭiprayānaka iti ṭa.. :p 195 naṣṭamadhye same 'ṅkenaḥ same 'rdha viṣame guruḥ pratilomaguṇaṃ nādyaṃ dviruddiṣṭaga ekanut

[Note: 1. 'grahavaso vasāt' is the reading of ms. ga. 2. 'caṇḍavṛṣṭiprayānaka' is the reading of ms. ṭa.] [p. 195] In the naṣṭa (procedure), in the middle: when the number is even (halve it) with the figure(?); when even, half; when odd, a heavy syllable. In the uddiṣṭa, the multiplication runs in reverse order, not from the first; twice, minus one for a heavy syllable.

सङ्ख्याद्विरर्धे रूपे तु शून्यं शून्ये द्विरीरितं तावदर्धतद्गुणितं द्विद्व्यूनञ्च तदन्ततः

saṅkhyādvirardhe rūpe tu śūnyaṃ śūnye dvirīritaṃ tāvadardhatadguṇitaṃ dvidvyūnañca tadantataḥ

The number is doubled when there is a half; but where there is a unit, (put) zero; at zero it is said to be doubled; so much is the half multiplied by that, and less by two and two at the end of it.

परे पूर्णं परे पूर्णं मेरुप्रस्तारतो भवेत् नगसंख्या वृत्तसंख्या चाध्वाङ्गुलमधोर्धतः सङ्ख्यैव द्विगुणैकोना छन्दःसारो ऽयमीरितः

pare pūrṇaṃ pare pūrṇaṃ meruprastārato bhavet nagasaṃkhyā vṛttasaṃkhyā cādhvāṅgulamadhordhataḥ saṅkhyaiva dviguṇaikonā chandaḥsāro 'yamīritaḥ

In the last, full; in the last, full — this results from the meru-prastāra. The number of mountains(?) is the number of metres; and the extent (adhvan) in aṅgulas, from below upward, is that very number doubled less one. This has been declared to be the essence of prosody.
