:e ity ādimāhāpurāṇe āgneye pratisargavarṇanaṃ nāma ūnaviṃśatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ chapter {20} :ś atha viṃśatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ sargaviṣayakavarṇanaṃ agnir uvāca prathamo mahataḥ sargo vijñeyo brahmaṇastu saḥ tanmātrāṇāṃ dvitīyastu bhūtasargo hi sa smṛtaḥ

[Thus in the primal great Purāṇa, the Āgneya, the nineteenth chapter, called 'The Description of the Re-creation.' Chapter 20. Now the twentieth chapter, the description concerning creation.] Agni said: The first creation is to be known as that of Mahat (the great principle), and it belongs to Brahmā; the second, that of the tanmātras, is indeed remembered as the creation of the elements.

Likewise the sixth, of those whose stream goes upward, is remembered as the creation of the gods. Then the seventh is the creation of those whose stream goes downward, and that is the human one.
